Her Sinful Angel – Excerpt

Lucifer stood in his study in front of the middle of the three towering windows, his gaze fixed on the distant plateau. White light broke the darkness there, a sign that angels were travelling between his realm and the mortal one.
A world he hadn’t set foot in for millennia.
His golden gaze slid off to his left and downwards, towards the room where he had left the mortal female.
Her world.
He clasped his hands behind his back and studied the black stone floor. His black suit jacket stretched tight across his chest as he breathed slowly but steadily, his mind churning over everything he had learned about the woman in his custody.
He still didn’t know why Mihail had brought her to him, and he couldn’t help thinking that it was a trap. It was possible that the woman had been given instructions, orders that were buried so deep in her mind that she wouldn’t remember receiving them. Some angels possessed the power to manipulate weaker creatures in such a manner, and everything she had told him yesterday had made it clear that Mihail or another angel had tampered with her memories.
If she had been given orders, then he had to wait for the right event to trigger them before he could discover why Mihail had sent her.
Lucifer narrowed his gaze on the floor, his focus on the woman.
He didn’t think she was anything other than mortal, but it was entirely possible he was wrong about that. Some species could masquerade as mortals. Shifters in particular. It had been a very long time since he had encountered one from that species, long enough that he might not recognise them.
She could be a witch too.
But she didn’t feel powerful to him. Her strength was barely a drop in the ocean of his.
Was she using a spell to mask her power and muddle his ability to detect lies on her?
He shook his head at that.
She hadn’t lied to him when he had asked whether she could remember what had happened to her, but she had lied when she had told him that she couldn’t think of a reason why anyone would want to harm her or have her kidnapped. If she possessed the ability to conceal her lies, she would have hidden that one from him.
There had been a haunted edge to her bright peridot eyes as she had uttered that lie and a spike in her heart rate that had warned him that she had walked the same path as he had millennia ago—a path of pain and suffering.
Of betrayal.
A path he still walked now.
He didn’t know what had happened to her, and he didn’t want to know.
She wasn’t here so he could learn about her. She was here so he could discover Mihail’s plan and take the angel down once and for all.
Lucifer dragged his focus away from her and fixed it back on the plateau.
Mihail was up to something and he had to concentrate on discovering what that was.
His focus slipped, his acute senses drifting to pinpoint the woman again.
Who had betrayed her?
The first stirrings of anger warmed his heart, warning him to pull his thoughts away from not her but the betrayal she had suffered before it was too late and his mood degenerated.
All of Hell would suffer if it slipped his grasp and his temper flared, but even the knowledge of what he might do in a fit of rage wasn’t enough to stop him treading the dark path of his memories to a place he had tried to forget.
A time when he had trusted someone and they had betrayed him.
A time when he had been given no choice and had been powerless to stop his fall.
Lucifer curled his hands into fists, his emerging black claws cutting into his palms. He glared at the plateau as another white streak of light appeared and growled through his short fangs, the desire to teleport there and tear into the angels almost overwhelming him and shattering his fragile hold on his control.
He wanted to rip their wings from them just as his had been torn from him.
He wanted them to suffer the torture that he had, the agony of being cast from their home, slung into a bottomless and dark pit where only endless pain awaited them.
He wanted them to know how it felt to do all that their master asked of them, to carry out every terrible act and horrific crime regardless of how it had made them feel, only to have that same master betray them.
Lucifer snarled and slammed his left fist into the black wall beside the window. The stone shattered under the blow but he didn’t feel the pain that ricocheted up his arm. He felt only the burning rage that lived in his heart, the pain of a thousand times of having his wings torn from his back, a hundred thousand lashings that had peeled the flesh from his bones, and a million hours of wondering what he had done wrong.
Followed by a million more contemplating his revenge.
He hadn’t realised it at the time he had served Heaven, a loyal dog for his master, but he had been set on the path towards his fall from the moment he had been created. It had all been part of a plan to create balance between the three realms.
His master had shaped him, giving him duties and missions with little information and stating that he trusted him to interpret the missions and carry out the duties therein without aid. Lucifer had felt he had owned a position of power, a place at his master’s side, but in reality he had been given as little information as possible in order to drive him into committing sins.
He had wanted to please his master, and he had ended up breaking unknown rule after rule, committing sin after sin.
When he had felt something stirring inside him, a darkness that had been destroying the light, he had wanted to stop.
It was then that his master had dealt the final blow.
He had been exiled from Heaven and thrown into the pit.
At the time, the pit had been a place of nightmares, filled with vile creatures bent on destroying angels, drawn to their light by a ravenous hunger to extinguish it.
Centuries into his torture, Lucifer had realised the reason the pit had been created. It had been designed as a place of punishment for angels. That had given him false hope that he could escape the pit if he served his time.
He had survived the torture his captors had dealt, the abuse they had inflicted upon him, using him against his will. He had wallowed, tormented by every sin he had committed in his life serving his beloved master. He had writhed in agony as he had tried to fight and claw his way out of the darkness to stand on his feet again. He had wanted to repent so he would be welcomed back into the fold.
He had wanted to return home.
But it had become too much for him, and the darkness had been too strong.
After what had felt like an eternity of fighting, he had surrendered to it, allowing it to fill him and vanquish his softer feelings in order to end his suffering and stop the pain. His thoughts had turned from repenting to revenge.
When he had eventually seized control of the realm through brute and relentless force, he had ended up changing it without really thinking about what he had been doing.
He had hunted and destroyed most of the original inhabitants of Hell and sent the rest fleeing to the far corners of Hell, allowing the weaker breeds of demons to emerge from the shadows and take their place.
Demons who had worshipped him as their master.
Lucifer hadn’t realised the power he possessed as the ruler of Hell until Heaven had chosen to create a new race of angels to serve it. He had tainted the soul of the first angel during its creation, a mere drop of darkness that had spread through it and corrupted it.
He had seen the extent of his power in that moment and he had embraced it.
He had thought of nothing but revenge since then. Every act he had undertaken had been done with the intent of dealing a blow to Heaven as they had dealt a blow to him. He had begun to grow an army, welcoming the fallen angels into his fold and giving them power so they could destroy any of the remaining demons who sought to punish them for their sins and could carry out his orders in the mortal realm. He had shaped the weaker demons and sent them forth to corrupt the humans. He had done it all to strike a blow that would shake Heaven to its foundations.
Wars had followed, a struggle for power that was endless and beautiful.
Lucifer smiled grimly at the pleasing memories as power coursed through him, darkness that bled from his skin like smoke and writhed as shadows around his arms.
He pulled his fist from the wall and turned his palm towards him, splaying his fingers as he watched the black ribbons fluttering around them.
He had lived shrouded in darkness. A king in his realm. He had passed millennia without feeling a thing.
No trace of light left inside him.
Until Erin.
The day he had learned of his daughter’s existence, he had been filled with a new purpose.
A desire to use her to finally achieve his dream of bringing down Heaven.
And the day he had first set eyes on her, something else had happened to him, something he had been fighting to hide ever since.
A tiny spark of light had burst to life in the dark cold pit of his soul.
Lucifer pressed his hand to his chest, the soft fabric of his black jacket, tie and shirt cushioning his palm. He curled his fingers, digging the tips into the material as he felt that light inside him, tormenting him, growing despite his attempts to squash it out of existence. It refused to die though, kept spreading tiny tendrils through him, reaching ever outwards and gaining ground against the inky dark.
As it grew, it restored parts of him that were better off dead, softer emotions that had no place existing inside him or in his realm. Emotions that were dangerous to possess in Hell. There were still creatures here drawn to the light in angels.
If his legions learned of the light waging war inside him, if the demons learned of it, a battle for his throne would erupt.
Every creature with power in his realm would seek his head.
He growled from between clenched teeth and vowed that none would ever know of it. He made sure that his men never witnessed his moments with his daughter and grandson, and those were the only times he felt powerless against the light, unable to contain and control it.
He would find a way to expel that light from his soul again, because he would do anything to protect his position. He might not have asked for his role in this realm, but it was his to play now and he had come to like his life in Hell. This realm was his home, his everything, and no one would take that from him.
His golden gaze dropped back to the floor.
No one.
Any threat to his throne would be dealt with.
Painfully.
He had given the mortal female time to become accustomed to her situation, but now that time was up.
Now he would use the small sliver of trust she felt towards him and her attraction to him to his advantage.
The trick Mihail had used on her to scrub her memories would be wearing off. While she wouldn’t remember that she had been taken by an angel, she might remember if Mihail had said anything to her or taken her anywhere before bringing her to Lucifer’s fortress.
And now that Mihail’s power was fading, Lucifer could employ his own abilities to sift through her memories as she tried to recall the events that had brought her to him.
If he discovered that she wasn’t in on Mihail’s plan, he would set in motion his own one.
He would implant orders into her head, ones that Mihail would unwittingly trigger if he returned for her.
The little mortal would become the instrument of the angel’s fall.
And Lucifer would be waiting for him with open arms.

Her Avenging Angel – Excerpt
Nevar turned down the alley that would bring him to Cloud Nine.

He stopped and frowned. The sign was off and there was no queue of mortals, but the club was open. What was going on? Only one way to find out. He walked towards the door.

The bouncer acknowledged him with a jerk of his chin and he pushed past the huge demon male and stepped into the club.

The lights were on inside, the colourful ones above the bar bathing the area and the demons milling around along its length. No music though.

No mortals.

His gaze sought the female he had met before, although he wasn’t sure why. It had been days since his last visit. She would be long gone, and it was stupid of him to hope that she would still be around, or remotely interested in him.

He headed for the bar, his eyes still scanning the demons for the woman even when he told himself to let her go and shove her out of his head.

A blonde cut into his path, her hands firmly planted on her hips, pale against her red jeans. A flicker of darkness danced in her eyes. Her stance caused her chest to jut upwards, showing off ample cleavage in her low cut black camisole. She narrowed her gaze on him and looked as if she was about to lose her pretty façade, revealing the hideous monster that lurked beneath her skin.

The boss.

And she was pissed about something.

He scanned the club again, frowning as he noticed that the demons present were jittery too, disturbed for some reason. Had something happened?

If it had, he wasn’t sure why the boss was holding him responsible, and the intense glare she was giving him said she definitely thought it was his fault.

“Do something,” she snapped, sharp teeth flashing between her glossy red lips, and flicked her short hair away from her face.

He arched an eyebrow down at her. “I don’t follow. What is your problem?”

She turned and pointed, and the crowd parted.

Nevar’s jaw almost dropped.

The female was there, curled up and sleeping on the grimy black bar top, naked again.

But not exposed.

Dark leathery wings wrapped around her slender form, cocooning her.

His feet moved of their own accord, carrying him across the room to her, unable to resist the powerful pull he felt towards her. The demons stepped back, making more room and allowing him and the boss to pass and approach the female.

What was she?

He cocked his head and his eyes darted over her before settling on her face. She was even more beautiful in sleep, her face soft and peaceful.

“She’s been sleeping there since the other night and she’s ruining my business. I can’t let mortals in when there’s a demon asleep on the bar.” The bite in the boss’s tone caused several demons nearby to edge further away and exchange nervous glances. “Do something.”

The blonde had a reputation as a hard-ass bitch with a temper, but he was damned if she was going to order him around. He had enough bosses in his life already.

“Tell her to leave then.” He cast her a glance as he folded his arms across his chest and shrugged. “It’s not my problem.”

She flashed twin rows of deadly sharp teeth on a hiss. “I tried that… and the bitch attacked me and started ranting. None of us could understand her.”

Nevar struggled to hold back the grin that tried to curve his lips as he thought about the boss getting a taste of her own medicine, served to her by such a delicate looking female. It was probably long past due and was definitely time someone had the balls to stand up to the demon owner of Cloud Nine.

He looked back at the woman sleeping on the bar and drew closer to her, feeling light and hazy as he approached her, as if he wasn’t quite with the world.

She had refused to leave the club. Why?

He had his answer when her eyelids fluttered and slowly opened, revealing sleep-filled hazel eyes that brightened as they settled on him.

She sat up, her black wings falling away from her body to drape across the bar top.

“I waited for you.”

He felt strange on hearing those words leaving her soft lips, as if they had cast a spell on him all over again and pulled him deep under it, leaving him suffused with warmth and peace.

“Can you understand the bitch like the bartenders said you could?” the boss said from beside his elbow and he nodded.

“I can. I don’t speak her language but I know what she’s saying, and she understands English.”

The blonde snarled, “Tell her to leave then or things will get ugly.”

Nevar had no doubt that things would only get ugly for the boss. The little female on the bar could probably lay the whole club to waste without breaking a sweat. What was she?

“I shall ask her nicely for you.” Nevar smirked at the boss and then turned his attention back to the female. “You have to leave.”

Her face lit up, she hopped down from the bar, landing close to him, her bare body almost brushing his, and smiled. “I will leave with you.”

Not quite what he had said and far from what he had intended, but he didn’t have the heart to tell her. He stared down into her eyes, picking out all the flecks of gold amongst green, lost in her all over again.

She stretched, raising her arms high above her head and flashing the entire room. Several of the male demons suddenly looked less nervous and more as if they might risk their balls by pouncing on her.

Nevar growled at them all and used his powers to produce jeans and a top.

He shoved them at her. “Dress.”

She took them and stared down at them, and he began to wonder if she had any concept of clothing and dressing herself.

He snarled at her. “Put them on or I swear I will break your wings off and dress you myself.”

She shrank back against the bar and curled her wings behind her, shielding them with her body as she eyed him with a flicker of fear colouring her face and her feelings.

Nevar sighed, pinched the bridge of his nose and breathed slowly. Utter bastard. Maybe he was better off in Hell, stuck in a room on guard duty, away from the world. He wasn’t fit to be near other people, and definitely not her.

He drew in another slow breath, exhaled it and lowered his hand to his side.

“You cannot walk around naked,” he said, trying a gentler approach, one worthy of such a beautiful female. “You must dress.”

She nodded, turned her back on him and set the clothes down on the bar. When she grabbed the jeans and bent forwards to put them on, flashing her bare backside at every male in the bar, Nevar growled and called his wings. They burst from his back, knocking a few of the demon males away, and he used them to shield her from their hungry eyes.

She shimmied into the black jeans and then held the silver-grey halter-top up, staring at it for so long that he realised she wasn’t sure how it worked and was trying to figure it out.

“Here.” He caught hold of her left wrist and spun her to face him, doing his best to keep her shielded by his black feathered wings and keep his eyes off her bare breasts. He took the top from her and eyed her leathery wings. “Can you make them go away?”

She shook her head. “Not right now. I am hungry. Weak. I require sustenance.”

“Same here.” But he didn’t think he was going to get his order of pulled pork buns and chicken wings now. The boss would kick him out as soon as the female was dressed and ready to leave.

He sighed again and pushed the image of delicious food from his mind. He could find somewhere to eat once he had lured her out of the club and ditched her.

He crouched in front of her and opened the tube of material that formed the lower half of the halter-top. “We will do this the hard way then. Step into it.”

She did as instructed and he slowly tugged the top up her long legs, biting back a groan as the feel of her thighs against his hands and his position had him instantly rock hard in his loincloth. No one would notice with his armour in place, but he didn’t like how quickly his body responded to her, or that they might see the effect she had on him.

She might see.

Was it because she was a demon and he was subconsciously thinking about her giving him Euphoria? Was his body hard-wired to see a female demon now and automatically prepare for sex?

He ground his teeth and cursed himself.

If it was, then it was his own damned fault.

He would ditch her as soon as he could and continue his mission, and forget all about Euphoria. He didn’t need it. He wouldn’t go back to whoring himself for a fix. It wasn’t worth the pain and humiliation.

If he wanted pain and humiliation, he could just return to Hell.

“Pull it up over your chest.” Nevar averted his gaze and rose to his feet.

She wriggled in the corner of his vision and then grumbled something as her arms moved. She waved the two lengths of fabric that were designed to hold the top up.

“What do these do?”

Nevar took them and placed them around her neck, and slowed as her silken hair brushed his skin and the heat of her washed over him, becoming painfully aware of how close she was to him, the bar at her back stopping her from being able to move away.

He breathed in her sweet dewy fragrance and savoured the soft warmth of her skin as his thumbs brushed her neck. He drank in her beauty as she tilted her head back, bringing her eyes up to his, and listened to her breathing as it hitched with each sweep of his skin across hers. She filled all of his senses, stealing his awareness of the world from him and narrowing it down to only her. He stared down into her eyes, mesmerised by the way they widened and overflowed with dark allure, and how her lips parted, tempting him to taste her and making him hunger for her.

He swallowed hard, forgetting what he was meant to be doing, transfixed by her and lost in the moment.

“I told you not to linger.” Asmodeus’s deep voice rumbled through the silent room and shattered the spell she had cast on Nevar. “I should have known you would.”

Nevar drew back and looked over his right shoulder, towards his dark master.

Asmodeus’s golden eyes fell on the female and widened. “What is she?”

Nevar kept asking himself the same thing.

REVIEW: "Angelfire" by Courtney Allison Moulton

Why this book?: Well, you all know how I feel about angels. Like I could turn this book down when my library/work purchased a copy? Pft!

Type: Young Adult Fiction, Paranormal, Light Romance, Angels!, Reapers, kick-butt heroines, amnesia (sorta..), Series

About the bookFirst there are nightmares.
Every night Ellie is haunted by terrifying dreams of monstrous creatures that are hunting her, killing her.
Then come the memories.
When Ellie meets Will, she feels on the verge of remembering something just beyond her grasp. His attention is intense and romantic, and Ellie feels like her soul has known him for centuries. On her seventeenth birthday, on a dark street at midnight, Will awakens Ellie's power, and she knows that she can fight the creatures that stalk her in the grim darkness. Only Will holds the key to Ellie's memories, whole lifetimes of them, and when she looks at him, she can no longer pretend anything was just a dream.
Now she must hunt.

My Review: There were parts of this book that I really, really loved. And I don't know if the rest of the book was just so-so for me, or if what I liked out-shined the rest of it so much that it fell way behind. Ellie was alright for a main character, but I didn't really enjoy her around her friends so much. I liked her better when it was just her and Will, training or just talking. And I loved their relationship. Each time Ellie is reincarnated, even when she gets her memories back, she's a little different, and this time more so. I loved watching Will and Ellie reconnect. They know each other so well in some ways, Will knowing Ellie more since he has all his memories, but at the same time, they are both someone new to the other. And I really felt that, so in that regard, the author did a truly wonderful job.

I also very much enjoyed the Reapers. The idea of the reapers, the mythology between those that fight for heaven and hell.. all of that, was absolutely fantastic. Well thought out and incredibly interesting, I, just like Ellie, kept wanted to ask more and more questions. To learn more about the world Ellie was born into/thrown into. And I can't wait for the second book so I can hopefully get more answers and more experience. By now, my readers will know how I feel about any sort of mythology in my books (for those that don't - I LOVE IT!), and it was refreshing to see Sumerian mythology and history cropping up. I'm not saying Greek mythology is overdone, I'm still a huge fan after all, but seeing Sumerian is new and fresh, something different.

As for the rest of the story, I really didn't care to learn more about Ellie's birthday present (a car), her friends, or any of her actual teenager-y duties. And these are all things that are important to Ellie, so of course they play a large role in the story. I'm not sure if I thought they weren't as well done or as well developed, I just know they sort of gray-ed out in my memory, especially when compared to how truly intriguing the Reapers and Will were. I know Bastian was supposed to be the villain of the story, but I just wanted to learn more about him than anything. The person I truly hated was Ellie's father. I hope we learn he's actually a demon or something in the future books. I really want him to have a reason to be such a complete jerk.

Cover Lovin': I really like this cover. I think it fits the story perfectly, and I was pleased to see the cover model actually resemble what I thought the heroine would look like. And it's great to get a visual of the sword she uses.

Recommendation: Good for teens and adults alike. There is light romance in this book, so probably geared towards those that would enjoy it, but as I said, it is LIGHT... parents need not fear - they do nothing more than kiss. Darn (in my opinion).

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE (4/5). I did enjoy this book. It's a quick read, and I didn't want to put it down for long. I loved the relationship between Ellie and Will, and that sense of them knowing each other, but it still being so new and different.

My Review: Whew, what a thrillride. This book wasn't what I was expecting - this is definitely a different take on fallen angels. Valentin fell, later than most of his brethren, and yet still joined with Lucifer's group. And it feels odd to say, but Lucifer really was an intriguing character, with his plots and schemes, and the way he dealt with the human race. And the ending threw me for a bit of a loop, it really didn't end like I thought it would. I read so many books where you know the outcome right from the beginning - not the how and why, maybe, but you know the basics. It's refreshing to not know for sure where and how things will go.

On the author's website, it mentions that Savannah Kline has been a freelance writer for years, but this is her first novel - well, what a great debut, for sure. "Beloved of the Fallen" was a wonderful read, definitely unique - something new and different for when books start to feel like more and more of the same old, same old. And I just want to say I'd like my own Valentin... with or without a broken wing.

Cover Loving: Yes. Definitely yes. I think this is an excellent, beautiful cover. Beautiful art and definitely a good choice for the story.

Recommendation: Fans of suspense, political intrigue, and the paranormal will want to check out "Beloved of the Fallen."

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE (4/5).

Can I have the one she doesn't choose? REVIEW of "My Fair Succubi" by Jill Myles

My Fair Succubi (The Succubus Diaries)Why this book?: Why are you even asking?! LOVE this series. Love Jill Myles. Please to be writing more Jackie books!

Type: Series, Angels, Vampires, Masters, Succubi, Sometimes Men Really Suck, How's A Girl to Choose?, Paranormal Romance, Can I have the one she doesn't want?

About the book: Well, things are starting to settle down for Jackie. She's working on the archeological dig of her dreams with her Serim master/lover Noah, and the Itch is under control.. mostly thanks to Noah. But Noah has a surprise up his sleeve, and it's not necessarily a good one - it's a ring, and a promise for the two to become much closer. If that wasn't enough to deal with, Jackie gets a call from her best friend, who just happened to be possessed, and now she's right back in the middle of Angel and Vampire politics. With Noah being held by the Serim council for judgement, Jackie is reunited with her vampire master Zane, and the sparks fly once again. How's a girl to choose between the two men that mean so much to her, and still manage to save the world from an evil being?

Review: So author Jill Myles has told us since the beginning that Jackie WILL choose someone, I wasn't sure if it was ever going to happen, and even then, I wasn't sure I could handle it. And guess what, in this book, someone is chosen - and I definitely agree with the decision. I'm not sure if it's the end-all choice, or if something will happen in later books, but IT HAPPENED. However, the road to the choice was paved with shock and a whole heck of a lot of pain. Myles definitely doesn't disappoint with this newest installment in The Succubus Diaries, with just the right mix of humor and paranormal drama, "My Fair Succubi" kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole journey.

The characters are, as always, perfectly done. I love these people, there the type of characters I desperately wished were real so I could meet them. And readers get a great new surprise - a new character to fawn over! Enter Ethan, a nephilim and Enforcer for the Serim Council. Ethan is definitely on my good list, and I can't wait to see more of him in the future. The plot left nothing to be desired, containing it's usual thrillride that makes me love this series so much. Once again, I am left wishing I could talk about my favorite part without giving away anything, but alas that isn't so. And for the fans of all the steamy angel or vampire sex scenes? Don't worry, there are plenty of those in the book as well.

Cover Lovin: Yes. Yes yes. Not only are there wings, but there is a sexy guy attached to them. I'm not sure he totally looked like Zane in my eyes, I see Zane as a little more world-weary... more rough, toughened. But that guy sure isn't bad.

Recommendation: Definitely! Jill Myles' "The Succubus Diaries" series is one of my top favorite series Of All Time. If I could, I would buy a bunch of copies of this series, give them to people, and force them to read it. So... Read it. Suggestion: Definitely read the series in order. Also, check out the freebie reads (which you can find links to on the author's website, here.)

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE (5/5). Myles had me almost crying at one point, laughing at several, and squeaking in joy near the end.

Review of "Bedeviled Angel" by Annette Blair

Bedeviled Angel (A Works Like Magick Novel)What's that? Another book with an angel? Yes.. yes it is. Shush it, I am not changing the blog name to "Glow's Angel Addiction." We talked about this. That would be weird. Now hush, we have a review to do.
Disclaimer: This is a book borrowed from my local library. I was not given it or any monetary incentive for a positive review.

Type: Paranormal Romance, Angels!, Guardians, Kids, Agoraphobia, Yellow Brick Road, I want a house like this, Awww puppies

From the back of the book: "   When Queisha Saint-Denis agreed to be a surrogate mother for a jet-setting - but childless - couple, she never dreamed she'd see a return on her gift. Literally. But now she's looking at two adorable orphans, who come with a lot of baggaged: there's a battle brewing over who "inherits" them and their huge fortune, plus an unwanted (and alarmingly attractive) guardian, who she's sure has been hired by the dueling family members to keep and eye on her more than the children. Chance Godricson is keeping an eye on Queisha. In fact, he's her guardian angel. Ever since he gave his life to save hers, Chance has felt an undeniable connection to Queisha. And now that he's back on Earth, in her house, surrounded by two scene-stealing moppets and a woman he finds irresistible, Chance is about to discover that helping Queisha and still staying angelic is not going to be easy... "

Sometimes I feel a little weird when young children are secondary characters. I don't know if it's because they don't seem real, or maybe because they don't act like I expect children that age to act. These children, Lace and Skye, came pretty close, but there was still a few moments where I wasn't sure if they felt too young for their age, or maybe too old. Of course, I'm not a parent, I'm not really around kids this age very much, so maybe they're spot on. I'll admit it, after a while, I started to ignore the kids' part in the story, except when it came to the inevitable fight for custody. Then stuff started to get interesting.

And occasionally, I wasn't sure which character was talking, or what they were talking about. But obviously I was interested enough to keep reading.. and I suppose I could say it paid off in the end. Along these lines, there were a few powers/abilities that just seemed weird to me. I wasn't sure who all had what powers. And the fact that a certain someone could just make a whole trail of bricks pop up and wind itself around the yard? Who has that power? I mean, who's like "Yes... Yes I must have the power to create brick trails for people. Include that in my list of super useful powers.. like the ability to glue pieces of paper together, and have one over-ly rubbery arm." Do you get the picture I'm painting there? Basically I'm saying it's a random, weird power. Obviously not totally useless, but a little weird.

As for the characters. Queisha was quirky, which is totally good, but there were a few times I just wanted her to hush. Or maybe act.. differently. I wanted her to just shut up about the kids being taken away from her and just enjoy it. She told herself so many times to not think about the fact that the kids will probably get taken away, and to just enjoy the time she had with them. That's wonderful... DO IT. As for Chance... Chance is the type of hero that I love - sarcastic and strong. I'm not saying he didn't have his faults - honest to the point of needing a good shaking - but he was someone I'd want to be around, maybe even hang with on occasion. And I did love how he was slowly losing his feathers.

Up until almost the very end, this book was going to be one of those "good, not great, but okay" kind of books. But there was an otherwise not-that-big-a-deal paragraph in the last chapter or two that made me sniffle, and I even had to show a friend. And because of that (Everlasting puppies were involved!), this book was pushed into a different category. So with that, I give you the rating..

So I'm going to give "Bedeviled Angel" by Annette Blair a FOUR out of FIVE (4/5). I did enjoy it, and for the most part, I loved the two main characters. I don't think I could deal with Queisha's neuroses, but I'd definitely want to cuddle up with Chance. And his backstory was a real winner (I LOVED his backstory.. but no spoilers from me).

Review of "The Ghost Hunter" by Lori Brighton

Another angel book! Maybe I should start calling this blog Glow's ANGEL addiction. Thoughts? Alright, alright, I won't. You can find the direct link to purchase this book here - The Ghost Hunter.  On with the review!

Disclaimer: The reviewer (me!) was provided this book by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. She (me!) was not given any monetary incentive for a good review.

Type: Angel!, Paranormal Romance, Ghosts, Fighting The Big Bad Guy, Witches, Sexy Accents!, Adult

About the book, from the Smashwords page: Ashley Hunter is intent on uncovering the truth about her father's disappearance. But Ashley realizes she's in for more than she bargained. Not only has she inherited a decrepit pub, she's also inherited ghosts and demons. Then Cristian arrives, a mysterious man who insists he only needs a room to rent. She believes him, until one by one her ghosts start disappearing...

"The Ghost Hunter" by Lori Brighton is a very interesting story with an equally interesting cast of characters. There's a girl who sees ghosts (Ashley), witches, faeries, angels, werewolves, vampires, demons, and more. And indeed, the final showdown is between a demon and an angel, which is always an epic battle the whole family will enjoy - as long as they are over the age of 17, because no kids are invited to this party. And speaking of interesting types of characters.. there was an appropriate amount of buildup to the reader finding out what Cristian really is, but once that's revealed.. it seems like sort of a let down. Like with all that build up, I was expecting more of a reaction from those not in-the-know, but it seemed to me that they moved on a little too quickly. Same with the disappearance of ghosts. Oh sure, Ashley is bothered by it when she's reminded of it, but it's not something that really bugs her, though we get the feeling it should be. And in fact, there was a time or two I forgot about the disappearance of ghosts all together.

As for the characters themselves, I loved Devon. Dearest Devon is mostly a side-character (or at least not a main character), but I thought he was danged important.. especially near the end. Poor Devon gets quite the shock when a memory spell goes awry, and to top that off, he's got a demon parasite that is making him do some really jerky things. It was certainly interesting to see how each of these changes affected his character and his actions. And there was a time or two I actually liked Devon more than Cristian. Cristian seemed a little heavy-handed sometimes, he would intentionally keep things from Ashley, answers she was obviously searching for, and yet he was shocked and often amazed by how little she knew. Uh, duuhhh, maybe because you won't tell her anything! And he would switch from wanting to teach her how to protect herself, to saying how she wasn't going to make it because she didn't know anything. Maybe you should stop huffing about and do something about it then! You and your wing tattoos and sexy accent should pick up your awesome sword (I kinda want one that's able to do what his can) and do something about it!

And sadly, I didn't really feel that spark between Cristian and Ashley. There was something there, obviously, but it felt like lust at best, not the supposed deep, lasting connection they kept making it seem like it was. It just didn't feel.. real enough to me, somehow. I wanted to delve further into the characters, and pick them apart, to find this connection and see if it was real, and if it worked. Which may sound awful, but I don't mean it to be harsh, in fact, it's probably a good thing that I want to reach further into each character and learn more about them.

And now to the rating. "The Ghost Hunter" by Lori Brighton really was a good, quick read. There was a very interesting storyline there, I just needed more than what I was given, I needed to feel more. I had some mixed feelings about this book, so I'll have to go with a middle-of-the-road rating - a FOUR out of FIVE (4/5). The good did outweigh any issues I had with it, and this book was something I could easily sit for hours and read, as opposed to feeling the need to get up and move around between chapters. I hope to see more by this author in the future, to see how her work develops because I can see a ton of talent here.

Review of "A Kiss Before the Apocalypse" by Thomas E. Sniegoski

A Kiss Before the Apocalypse: A Remy Chandler NovelANGELS! Fallen and otherwise! Not to mention an author I love. For those of you sick of my angel obsession, feel free to blame Thomas E. Sniegoski.

Disclaimer: This book was not given to me in exchange for a review, nor have I been given any monetary incentive to write a positive review. I am, however, an Amazon Affiliate. By clicking on the link below, I will earn a (very) small percentage.

Type: Fiction, Fantasy, Series, ANGELS!!, Private Investigator, The end of the world
From the back of the book: "  Boston P.I. Remy Chandler has many talents. He can will himself invisible, he can speak and understand any foreign language (including the language of animals), and if he listens carefully, he can hear thoughts.
Unusual, to say the least - for an ordinary man. But Remy is no ordinary man - he's an angel. Generations ago, he chose to renounce heaven and live on Earth. He's found a place among us ordinary humans; friendship, a job he's good at - and love.
Now he is being drawn into a case with strong ties to his angelic past. The Angel of Death has gone missing - and Remy's former colleagues have come to him for help. But what at first seems to be about tracing a missing person turns out to involve much more - a conspiracy that has as its goal the destruction of the human race.
And only Remy Chandler, formerly known as the angel Remiel, can stop it.  "

I said it before, but I'll say it again - ANGELS! This author wow-ed me with his "Fallen" series, and he's at it again with the Remy Chandler series. Remy has left heaven to live amongst the humans. Since he didn't fall, and actually just created a human persona for himself, Remy's two natures - human and angelic - are constantly fighting throughout this book. And he needs to take strength from both sides if he's going to stop the apocalypse. There is so much emotional conflict in this one book alone. Remy knows he needs to find the Angel of Death and bring him back, and stop the end of the world from happening, but at the same time, can he deal with the fact that the Death Angel will have to take his elderly, and sick, wife when he returns?

Remy is a fascinating character, but he's one of many. We have the Grigori - The Watchers - who just can't seem to stop enjoying themselves (music, parties, and sex included), Francis - who now guards Earth from any wayward fallen angels, and even Lazarus. I was instantly a little fascinated by Lazarus, since he is the one from biblical legend. He was called back from Death, and was never able to die again afterwards, no matter how much he tried. And I can't forget Marlowe, Remy's dog, who is just the sweetest thing ever. Even knowing how dangerous things can be, Marlowe doesn't want to leave Remy to face it alone.

"A Kiss Before the Apocalypse" had such a dynamic cast of characters, and such a complex plot, there's no way I could go into it all. The story was well done, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Once again, author Thomas E. Sniegoski did not disappoint. Thank goodness I have the rest of the series so I can continue reading them. Whew. I'm going to give "A Kiss Before the Apocalypse" by Sniegoski a FIVE out of FIVE (5/5). It had a wonderful story, and even better characters. I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see how the events of this book effected his life.

My "Must re-read every couple months/years" - Series edition

Today, I shall tell you the series that are so important to me, and I love so much, that I have to re-read every couple months, or in some cases... every couple years.

Let's start at the beginning (or.. the one I read first).. The Chronicles of Narnia. The whole reason I started reading this series, was because I found a tape of the old BBC versions of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," "Prince Caspian," "The Dawn Treader," and "The Silver Chair." Watching them now, I recognize them as uh.. so-so movies. But when I was little? They were the BEST THINGS EVAR! I actually own them on DVD now, of course. But from those movies, I found the books. And as I said, they're now some of my favorites. And, in my opinion, the best of them all? "The Last Battle."

I even love the new movies. Prince Caspian makes me sniffle sometimes, even. Oooh, epic battle scenes, I love you!

Next up? Lord of the Rings of course!! I remember when I was about thirteenish, my Mom told me I HAD to read The Hobbit. It actually took me forever to get into.. but once I did, I raced through the rest of the series. I love them all (well.. maybe the Two Towers a little less), but maybe Fellowship and Return a little more than the rest. And Return had a bunch of Appendices in the back. The nerd in me had a fun time reading them all. And while I had plenty of gumbles with the movie versions of this wonderful series... I have to say, they did a pretty good job, considering how tough Lord of the Rings can be.

Of course "Harry Potter" is on the list! I've read all but the last one many times... but that final book. Dang, I can't do it. I can't believe it's over, so I apparently think that as long as I don't re-read the last book when I go back through the series, it will never end. I would love to see a book or two featuring the Marauders when they were in school. I'm sure some of you have noticed my love of side characters... so of course I had to focus on characters that were either dead before the series even started, and aren't mentioned too much, or... Well, you know.

So what is that next one? The Fallen series by Thomas E Sniegoski. Man do I love these books. And I consider them one of my life changing/view changing series. I remember getting these books out of the library so often, I'm sure the librarians were sick of putting them away. And finally, I got the series for Christmas, and I nearly cried I was so happy. There are four books, featuring fallen angels and their nephilim children. I actually haven't re-read this series in a while. Obviously I need to get on that! And Fallen is definitely what started my fallen angel obsession. I think they made these books into a miniseries... if so, I've never watched it. Maybe someday. I do know that the books were reissued.. with the first two books packaged together, and the final two done the same. I do love the new covers.. so much so I might have to buy them. Darn my fallen angel obsession!

Well, there you have it, folks. My Must Be Re-Read books - Series edition. Hopefully some time soon I will feature my Must Be Re-Read books, stand alone or singular edition. Singular meaning it's sort of part of a series, but it stands out more than the rest, at least to me.   But how about you guys? Do you have any such series?
