Review: A NECESSARY EVIL by Christina Kaye!

My Review: I'm typically a romance reader, but sometimes other things catch my interest - and this definitely caught my attention. The story itself - two men, estranged since their teens, are trying to solve the same crime... from different sides of the law. Not only is that a darned good story line, but it's original. It's also a fast read. The pacing and plot pull the reader forward, making this a book you won't want to put down - I definitely didn't want to stop.

It's not perfect, there were a few moments of telling the reader something, rather than showing them, but it was so rare, and so small that it hardly detracts from the depth and suspense of the story.

This book just had so many fascinating levels. You have a definite good guy, and the for-sure bad guy. But what do you do when your other hero is also a bad guy? Everyone loves a good anti-hero, and Frankie will be your next favorite. I would love to see this as a movie - I think it would transfer well to screen. Be sure to get your copy today!

Review: CUFFED by K. Bromberg!

     

My Review: A little torn on this one, honestly. I am absolutely in love with the teasing nature of Grant and Emerson - the one-upmanship, the teasing (the scene at the drugstore with the Tampax and Viagra had me laughing out loud)... But I have my issues with Emerson herself. Part of me understands why she's so "only live in the now," considering her past, I get it. But at the same time, that made her such an emotionless, almost shallow character, it was hard to like her. But because this is by K. Bromberg, she made me love everyone and everything by the end. It just felt like it took a while for me to get there.

As much as this book made me laugh, or fall in love, I still can't let go of my dislike of Emerson in the beginning. And I really want to, because there was so much good here. I also want to talk about how much I loved Grant's family - his realistic (and sometimes antagonistic) relationship with his brothers, and the family as a whole. Sure, the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine steals the show, but familial and friendships matter too! And they really add to the genuineness of the book.

Recommendation: New series, new slate! No prior knowledge necessary.

Final Rating: I'm wavering between a 3.5 and a 4 on this one, but I'm going with FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)! There was more than enough good to outweigh any difficulty I had, and overall, it was a great read.

Review: BULLETS AND BONFIRES by Autumn Jones Lake!

My Review: Have you ever wanted to grab people in movies or books and make them kiss? Like, you know it's coming, it's going to happen no matter how hard they fight... you just want to push them together and make it happen sooner rather than later. That was me during the first half of this book. C'mon! You two were clearly meant to be, you just need to kiss and everything will be perfect! Except not because Bree is dealing with some intense stuff. It's like these two were just circling each other.. bit when they finally pounced - whew! Hot.

I have to applaud the author for how well she wrote a woman coming out of an abusive relationship. Bree is caught between being proud for deciding to leave, and feeling awful because she thinks all this is her fault. And just because it's the hero touching her, it doesn't make everything suddenly okay - she still got freaked out by certain touches or positions. The author didn't skimp on the gritty, real life details, and I greatly appreciate that. It all added to the suspense element, and also made Bree's fight to overcome that much more inspiring.

Recommendation: Stand-alone, no prior knowledge necessary.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)! A great read, with a perfect mix of sweet and suspenseful.

My Review: I'll be the first person to tell you that I am over love triangles. It's been done - a lot. But you know what, apparently there is some part of me that still sees that story line as a guilty pleasure. Power Play is a fascinating romantic suspense with a very tough choice - do you love Parker or Ryker more? On one hand, we have the sexy, clean-cut boss, and on the other hand, we have the rough and tumble cop.

The love triangle isn't the only cliche in this book. There's plenty, for exampe - the boss that doesn't notice her until another man shows interest - but the suspense in this book was worth it. I loved the story itself. Sage was in a tough place, and I was on the edge of my seat while it all played out. The Mafia angle was fascinating, and it made me both excited and nervous.

When I found out the second book featured the same people, I was a little turned off. But considering how Power Play ends, I cannot wait until the second book!

Cover Lovin': Well, this one caught my eye so that should tell you something.

Recommendation: If you still need some love triangles in your life. And if you love some suspense with your romance. And be prepared to immediately pre-order book 2!

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5). Some cliches, for sure, but overall, this was a very enjoyable read. Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.
