Review: DR. STRANGE BEARD by Penny Reid!

My Review: I've only read a few books in this series, but everytime I do, I am blown away by how deep and emotional they can get. You'd think, with these fun covers, that everything would be happy puppies and butterflies.. but Penny Reid can hit you right where it hurts, let me tell you. She's great at making you really feel the characters hurt, love, annoyances, etc.. and 99% of the time, that is absolutely perfect.

This book was unfortunately that 1%. But even that isn't totally accurate.. it's Simone that was that 1% of boo-hiss. Because Reid is so genuine with her characters and the emotional connection she makes you feel.. what could have just been mild annoyance turned into one giant eye roll (and the subsequent headache from the strain). Roscoe was beyond perfect. The family was amazing. The story was so good... but Simone, man. She was just so... nitpicky.

Cover Lovin': I love these covers! So original and cool. 

Recommendation: The family is close knit, so there are a lot of recurring characters. But it can be read as a stand alone if you're willing.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!!! It was so, so close to a five, but Simone irked me enough to drop it down. But man, Roscoe is worth a five at least..  maybe a ten, even?

Review: MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE by Penny Reid!

My Review: This book has everything right going for it. A super awesome romance trope (marriage of convenience), a swoon worthy hero, a heroine with a complex backstory... and Penny Reid! The second I heard about this book, I was sold. I'm so glad I got the chance to read and review this!

I have read plenty of books with this popular romance trope, but I have to say, this author put an incredibly fresh spin on it. Actually, the whole thing felt different and original. The timid heroine thing has been done a million times before - but what about a girl who is timid because she's already had her wild years, and now she's just unsure how to be the person she needs to? Ahh, it was just so well done! I love Penny Reid, and I can't wait to see more by her!

Cover Lovin': Absolutely adorable!

Recommendation: Can be read as a stand-alone, no problem.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!! A marriage of (in)convenience done right!

Review: BEARD IN MIND by Penny Reid!

My Review: This is my first Winston brothers book, and oh man, why the heck did I wait??? Let me start by saying I had absolutely no clue what I was getting into. I guess, due to the cutesy covers and amusing titles, I assumed these would be super lighthearted and just generally adorable. And sure, there were definitely some moments of both of those, but this book is so much  more, so much DEEPER than I ever expected. Beau is dealing with some seriously tough emotional upheavals,  and Shelly has her own mental illness to work through. And huge kudos to the author for clearly putting in so much effort and research into Shelly 's disorder.

I am not ashamed to say this book make me a little emotionally unstable. To be honest, there was a time or two I was almost moved to tears. This book is so... real. I could feel Beau's anguish over his twin leaving, over Shelly's reaction to everything he did. And Shelly herself.. I'm not sure I have the right words to express everything I felt for her, and with her.

This is not my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. But it might be my favorite. I already had the rest of this series on my to read list.. clearly they need to be bumped to the very top.

Cover Lovin': This may be my first Winston brothers book, but I've always loved the covers.

Recommendation: While the brothers pay a big role in each others' lives, this can be read as a stand alone.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! This book more than deserves a perfect score. It was emotionally moving, and I absolutely could not put it down. It deserves to be added to your to buy list immediately!!

It’s so dark.” “I can see.” Unbidden, my eyes dropped to her body, to the swell of her breasts, the panel of bare stomach, the curve of her hips. Pinpricks of heat raised over my skin and I curled my hands into fists. She shuffled forward and I caught her before she bumped into me, setting my hands gently at her waist. “Let me take you to your room.” My voice was rough, for obvious reasons. Despite the session on Friday and the progress that had been made, I realized she wasn’t quite there yet. Dr. West was right, Friday was just a step, the first step. Shelly wasn’t able to initiate contact. Not yet. Her hands balled into fists and she swayed forward, her breath struggling little puffs. If anything was going to happen tonight, I had to initiate it. I had to be the one to touch first. God, how I wanted her. How I wanted her above me, beneath me, surrounding me. But how could I? “I know why I hesitate,” her voice was breathless, “but why do you hesitate?” “Lots of reasons.” “Give me one.” “I don’t want to you use you.” “I wish you would.” That pulled a laugh from me, just a small relief from the mounting tension. He shrugged, crossing his arms, stalking after me. “Or exponential. I was going to say a Likert scale, but a logarithmic scale works, too.” Chuckling, appreciative of his attempt to diffuse my embarrassment and awkwardness with the joke, I realized Matt Simmons wasn’t a bad guy. He might even be a good guy, just a little . . . peculiar. And wants to replace romantic relationships with robots. Best not forget that detail. Review: THE CAD AND THE CO-ED by L.H. Cosway & Penny Reid!

My Review: This was soooooo cute! I heard so much talk about The Hooker and the Hermit a little while ago, so I bought it, read it instantly, and loved it. But I think I like The Cad and the Co-ed even more! Bryan is such a sweetie - or at least, he turns out to be. Bryan in the very beginning, well... what a jerk. I think what I liked the best about this book was how awkward Bryan and Eilish are - not just with each other, but in general. Bryan is still learning himself after becoming sober, and Eilish hasn't had much of an adult social life. I can't tell you the amount of times I chuckled out loud because of Eilish's inability to speak normally, or Bryan's old-man behavior. And the obsession with keeping plants alive! I loved it.

You know me, I love the drama - and the drama that evolved between Eilish and Bryan felt completely natural. The awkward misunderstandings gave way to massively difficult situations, and I could actually feel how upset the characters were that things had gotten so out of hand. L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid know how to write some genuine, believable, and lovable characters. Now excuse me while I go buy The Player & The Pixie because I need, need, need it!

Cover Lovin': I love the covers for this series. They work great as a whole, and are definitely eye catching on their own. 

Recommendation: You don't have to read the rest of the series before picking this one up, but you'll want to! 

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)! I loved this so much. I stayed up way too late one night finishing it, and it was the first thing I reached for the next morning. I absolutely cannot wait for more by these authors, and I'm 100% going back to read The Player and the Pixie, which I somehow managed to miss!
