Review: SHADES OF WICKED by Jeaniene Frost!

Release Date: October 30th, 2018

Type: Paranormal Romance, Series, Book 1, New series, Bad boy, Spin-off series, Good-Bad Guy

My review: I have been a giant fan of Jeaniene Frost since the second Night Huntress book was released, which is when I discovered them. And honestly, I've been waiting for Ian's story since the beginning. But I remember reading a review Jeaniene Frost did, and she said something along the lines of Ian having not grown up enough yet. And honestly, it made sense. But the further the Night Huntress series, and its spin-offs, went, the more you could see Ian developing into who he needed to be to get his own story. And I thought I was ready, but I was so not prepared.

I could not put this down. It is for sure a one-sitting read. In fact, I wasn't even aware how long I had been sitting in one position, eagerly turning pages, until I finished, stood up, and heard all my joints crackle. But I had to know what was going to happen. I loved reading about Ian and Veritas snarking at each other, starting to fall in love, trying to get out of the different scrapes they find themselves in.. It was all wonderful.

This is Jeaniene Frost at her best. She brought everything we loved about her complex and entertaining plots, all the characters we know and love, and mixed in a grumpy older Law Guardian and a snarky-yet-noble scoff-law. I cannot wait for the next book!!

About the Book: In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!

The Rule Breaker

Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless…and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he’s never been able to abide by the rules for long.

The Law Maker

Veritas’ normal role is police, judge and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait…well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s devil-may-care, roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers that Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences…

Cover Lovin': I wish Ian's hair would look redder, but otherwise, I love it!

Recommendation: Can be read without the rest of the Night Huntress world, but some knowledge of it would definitely help.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! I knew when Ian finally got his own story that it would be EPIC, and I was so not disappointed! But how am I supposed to wait until the next book?!?!

Review: HOT WINTER NIGHTS by Jill Shalvis!

Release Date: 9-24-2018

Type: Contemporary, Romance, Series, Book 6, Christmas/Seasonal/Holiday

About the Book: Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn't think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn't most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she's been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that — but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once...

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don't mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he's shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly's brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can't believe he's drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who's the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he's ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he's been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

My Review: Jill Shalvis is one of those authors that I always enjoy, but every time I pick up a new book by her, I'm reminded just how much I love her, and how perfectly sweet her stories are. Her heroes are hot, her heroines are women I respect and would gladly be friends with, and the drama is genuine. From the first scene - the awkward wake up with no idea how he got into bed with her - to the ending, I was hooked.

This is technically a best friends-younger-sister romance, though Molly is Lucas' partner's sister, not necessarily his best friend. Both Lucas and Molly are damaged and closed off in their own ways, but you can see both of them start to open up when they're around each other. And the teasing.. I loved whenever they teased each other. It was so cute, fun, and usually - very hot. This was an awesome story, and I loved every second of it!

Cover Lovin': So cute and sweet!

Recommendation: Even though it's book six, it can be read as stand alone.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! Jill Shalvis remains one of my go-to's for a solid, feel-good romance.

Review: TAKE ME IN THE NIGHT by R.K. Kenderson!

My Review: I'm going to *try* and review this. Why would it be hard, you ask? Because I don't think the English language has enough words to describe how AWESOME this was! I read this on a family road-trip, and the drive flew by, because I was so engrossed in this story. I love second chance romances anyways, and misunderstandings, and this had that to the Nth degree.

You know what else it had? Hotness. So hot I had to turn on the A/C in the car. It was intense, it was emotional, it was doing some very dangerous stuff to my libido. Maddox has for sure been added to my book boyfriend list. He's my new all-time favorite. This is not an easy book, because it will make you hurt, but you'll be thanking the author in the end. Trust me.

Cover Lovin': Oooh, I love the grayscale!

Recommendation: Works as a stand-alone.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! Holy cow, I don't think I have enough words. This should go on EVERYONE'S must-buy list!

Today we have the blog tour for R.L. Kenderson’s TAKE ME IN THE NIGHT! Check it out and order your copy today!

Title: Take Me In the Night

Author: R.L. Kenderson

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About TAKE ME IN THE NIGHT:

First, he took my heart. It started in high school. I was his girlfriend…he was the love of my life. We had plans for after graduation. We were going to escape—he from his family’s reputation and me from my father’s control. But all that changed the summer before college. Charged with a crime he hadn’t committed, he was whisked away from life, never to be heard from again. Then, he takes my body. Twelve years later, he’s back. He’s bigger, he’s tougher, and he’s harder around the edges. He’s no longer the boy I fell in love with. But I’m no longer the girl who gave him her heart. Everything’s changed between us. Anger, resentment, and bitterness have replaced happiness, love, and trust. Except for when darkness falls. That’s when he comes to me at night, taking what is still his. Now, he’s going to take my soul. When the lines between our old love and our new hate begin to blur, I know that, this time, I might not survive if he leaves.

About R.L. Kenderson:

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae has always loved reading, and in third grade, she wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then, she knew she wanted to write her own. When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. When they discovered their first vampire romance, they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certain storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own. One lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and the other in the Kansas City area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom/wife and pharmacist/mother by day, and together they’re a sexy author by night. They communicate through phone, email, and whole lot of messaging. You can find them at http://www.rlkenderson.com, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Goodreads. Review: CAPTURED BY HER COUGAR by Felicty Heaton!

New York Times best-selling paranormal romance author Felicity Heaton is here today for the book tour of her new shifter romance release, Captured by her Cougar, the second book in her brand new Cougar Creek Mates Series. Set in her popular Eternal Mates world, Cougar Creek Mates takes you into the deep Canadian wilderness to a secret place that’s home to a cougar shifter pride led by four sexy brothers, each guaranteed to steal your heart and set it racing! With all four books in the series releasing just weeks apart, this is going to be one hot summer.
Check out the book, download it with your Kindle Unlimited subscription if you have one, and be sure to enter the awesome grand giveaway happening at her website!

My Review: If you're worried about the sophomore slump when it comes to a good series.. then you need to give Felicity Heaton a shot, because her books are always quality! I loved this one just as much as the first book. I thought Rath was sexy, but Storm might be even better! I appreciated his growly nature, and I think my favorite part was just how much he enjoyed needling Gabi. It was just so amusing to watch them intentionally tick each other off.

I wasn't sure how well the drama would go in this book, considering it seemed like book one was crazy intense - how could this possibly match up? But it keeps the excitement going, trust me. There was drama, misunderstandings, emotions, and sexytimes - everything a good romance needs to make it something spectacular. What I loved the most about this book, is that I can really see these two falling in love and being happy together. And boy, do I wish I had a Storm of my very own.

Book three can't come fast enough!

Cover Lovin': Matches the series perfectly.

Recommendation: Can technically be read as a stand alone, but knowledge of what happened in book 1 is definitely helpful!

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! Another awesome Cougar Creek Mates book! If books 1 and 2 are any indication, the next one will also be off-the-charts awesome... and I can't wait!

About the Book

Captured by her Cougar (Cougar Creek Mates Shifter Romance Series Book 2)
Felicity Heaton
In the wake of an Archangel attack on Cougar Creek, Storm is seething with a need for revenge against the hunter organisation and the key to it might be the petite blonde mortal he’s locked in his cabin, one he’s determined to make sing for him. Only the beauty has a fiery temperament to match his own, and the more time he spends with her, the more she stokes a fire inside him. One that fills him with a startling and undeniable need to make her sing in another way—in his arms.
Gabriella isn’t going to take her captivity lying down. She’s going to give the pig-headed brute holding her against her will hell until he finally believes she’s innocent. He might be a cougar shifter, but she isn’t afraid of him. Or at least she isn’t afraid of what he is. The way he affects her, the flames that lick through her whenever they’re close, terrifies her though, because the longer she’s around the towering sexy-as-sin shifter, the hotter that fire blazes, and it’s only a matter of time before it burns away all her restraint.
With the mating heat and the attack bringing cougars back to the creek, Gabriella is a complication Storm doesn’t need, but she’s one that he wants… because she might just be his one true mate.

Excerpt
Storm slid his gaze back towards the door.
Towards Gabriella.
She groaned and moved again, and this time, it sounded more like a whimper. He focused. Her heartrate was off the scale too. Having a nightmare?
He didn’t give a damn if she was.
Really didn’t.
Storm scrubbed a hand over his mouth. Fuck, it had been a mistake to set up his cabin as her cage. Sure, it had been the right thing, because it would keep her safe from the other males coming to the area and it was easier for him to keep an eye on her in his own home.
But the whole place smelled of her already.
Her scent was embedded in everything, felt as if it was seared right into his soul.
Sunshine, sand and surf, with a hint of something tropical.
He snagged the red comforter from the couch, brought it to his nose and inhaled, and muttered a ripe curse as it smelled of her.
And damn, she smelled good.
Had his instincts as a male firing on all cylinders.
He growled and hurled it away from him as he stalked to the front door of the cabin, intent on leaving.
He froze there, his senses immediately locking on her.
Gabriella.
What had happened to Rath was her fault.
That refused to stick and he wanted to growl again, a need to blame her so he could direct some of the anger burning inside him at her twisting him into knots inside. He didn’t feel it though, not when it came to her.
He thought about Alexander, and sure enough, the blame stuck to him like super glue, had his anger flaring hot in his veins all over again.
He tried blaming her for what had happened to his parents, and to him, all those decades ago. It refused to stick too.
“Fuck,” Storm muttered and strode to the small white refrigerator beneath the kitchen counter, one that was rapidly warming now the power was out.
He yanked it open, grabbed a beer and slammed it shut again.
He cracked the brown bottle open, chugged the contents so fast he almost choked on them as he glared at the darkening world outside through the window, and didn’t flinch as he tossed the empty in the sink and it smashed.
Gabriella gasped.
Her fear shot through him.
Storm looked at the broken glass in the metal sink, and then over his left shoulder at the bedroom door.
He huffed as he strode to the main door of the cabin, tugged it open and slammed it behind him. He stepped off the raised covered deck that surrounded three sides of his single-storey cabin, and stormed along the worn path towards the clearing to his right. His fingers curled into fists and then flexed, his anger getting the better of him as he took long strides towards the river, the fading warmth of day washing over his bare chest.
He breathed hard, each one laboured as the need to burn off some energy returned, had him wound tight and his cougar side agitated, almost to the point of frenzied.
Two males came out of the thick woods to his right, stepping into the clearing, and he bared fangs at them and growled, hungry for a fight.
The younger males gave him a wide berth though, so all he could do was pace the stony bank of the river as the sun began to set.
He wasn’t sure how long he strode back and forth across the grass, his eyes on it as he fought to quell the urge to shift and start a fight.
When he felt eyes on him, it was darker, but his vision adjusted the second he lifted his head and fixed his gaze on the male approaching him.
Rath.
His oldest brother raked fingers through his thick brown hair, his grey eyes guarded.
“What are you doing pacing the riverbank?” Rath’s deep voice rolled over him, as smooth and calm as the water that raced over the rocks behind Storm.
He flashed fangs at Rath. “Pacing. What the fuck does it look like I’m doing? You have a problem with me pacing?”
“I have a problem when it leads to you being aggressive towards others.”
“Aggressive?” Storm snorted and took a hard step towards his brother, getting in his face. “You haven’t seen me aggressive.”
“I have.” Rath’s calm tone grated, had Storm wanting to grab him and do something. Rattle him. Shake him until he bit. “I take it things aren’t going well with Gabriella?”
Storm bared his teeth again at the mention of her name. “Little Bird will sing.”
Rath arched a dark eyebrow at that, but didn’t pick him up on the nickname he had given her. “Maybe you need to go back to your cabin and cool off.”
“Maybe you need to get the fuck out of my face?” Storm took another hard step forwards, bringing himself chest to chest with his brother.
Rath just sighed. “I’m not going to fight you, so quit trying to make it happen.”
Storm felt like a dick as Rath took a casual step backwards, placing some distance between them. Threatening his brother when he was injured? What the fuck was wrong with him?
He stared at Rath’s right shoulder, seeing beyond the dark fleece he wore to the wound beneath.
An injury her brother had given him.
He growled and looked towards his cabin, seething with a need to return to her and do something to make her talk.
“She hasn’t said anything at all?” Rath’s measured tone, so calm and even, soothed him and he clawed back some control over his mood, enough that he could progress from merely growling and snapping at his brother to having a conversation.
“She asked about your condition, and she wants to see Ivy.” Storm didn’t take his eyes off his cabin.
“Ivy mentioned that Gabriella was the one who secured her initial funding from her brother, and they get along.”
So Little Bird hadn’t been lying about that then.
Rath continued, “Maybe it’s a good idea that Ivy speaks with her. I’ll go with her.”
Storm growled at that, a low vicious one that echoed around the forest and had a few birds flying their roosts.
Because no damned way he was letting Rath take over things with his Little Bird.
If she was going to sing for anyone, it was going to be for him.
He pushed past his brother, his words a dark snarl in the fading light, filled with purpose and determination.
“I’ll get her talking.”

Review Blitz: TOUCH OF ICE by Mary Auclair!

The title is cold but this sci-fi romance will leave you RED HOT. Get Touch of Ice by Mary Auclair NOW!!!
It's AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE:

My Review: Oh, this was so, so good! I'll be honest, when I decided to read this, I figured it would be a fun, easy, mindless read. And it was so much better than I could have ever guessed! Instead of a fun but overall meaningless read, I got something so special. Touch of Ice is beautifully written. This author has created a fascinating world that I cannot wait to see more of.

I read this in two sittings, and it would have been less if I didn't have to work. I loved Aldric and Endora's relationship.. and for that matter, I loved Aldric and Rhyl's relationship! I desperately want to know more about the dragons, and their relationship with their... not human.. alien, I guess? Also, I don't want to give anything away - but the ultimate villain is epic. Scary, but such a good evil.

Cover Lovin': Stunning!

Recommendation: Book one, so no prior knowledge necessary!

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! This was such a great book. A wonderful fantasy romance!

BLURB:
He is as cold as ice. She is the salvation that will melt his heart. When Endora is faced with her daughter’s terminal illness, she takes the only chance she’s got. She braves the potential risks and signs a mating contract with the Delradon Draekon Lords, intent on using the payment to buy the aliens’ cure to save her daughter’s life. Lord Aldric Darragon rules over his land with an iron fist until one day the only woman who is genetically compatible with him agrees to his offer of mating. As his all-consuming passion for Endora explodes, an ancient threat looms heavy over humans and Delradons alike. With the lives of everyone he cares about hanging in the balance, Aldric has to fight the demons of his past if he wants to defeat the enemies of the present. Publisher’s Note: This gripping sci-fi alien romance has it all: dragons, passion and tension. It also contains explicit themes and is intended for adults only.

Review: BUTTERFACE by Avery Flynn!

2018-0627 Avery Flynn

My Review: I love, love, love Avery Flynn. Not only is she a super fun person, but her books are always a great read. I don't think I've read a single Avery Flynn book that wasn't a one-sitting read, because I just can't put it down. And long time readers of my blog will recognize her as one of the first authors that requested a review from me, back when I was just getting started! Ever since then, she's had me hooked.

I had so many feels while reading this book, guys. I think all women have some sort of insecurity (or a lot of them, like me!), so you can for sure empathize with Gina. And if you've ever been teased at school, you'll understand exactly how she feels. But Gina is a tough chick, and she knows looks don't matter - just being a successful and happy woman does. But hey, she's not going to turn down a kiss from Ford Hartigan, even if she is more than a little suspicious.

These two... Oh man. Even though you know it's all going to go bad before it goes good, you keep rooting for them. And it was such a joy to watch rule-follower Ford lose some of that stiffness when it comes to Gina. If I didn't have a huge pile of other books to read, I think I'd already be re-reading my favorite parts of Butterface. It was fun, it was sweet, it was heartbreaking, and then heart-healing.. Just what ever romance reader needs!

Cover Lovin': This cover is just so adorably pink!

Recommendation: You'll want more of the Hartigans immediately!

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! I absolutely could not put this down. I loved every second!

Synopsis
Looks aren’t everything.
It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…
Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard.
I recognize him immediately. The hottest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league.
But then he kisses me.
And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything.
Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.
Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.
But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.
Because this is not a makeover story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…

About Avery
USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip. She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name. Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs. AveryFlynn

Review: RECOVERED by Jay Crownover!

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jay Crownover comes a standalone romance with a hero sure to keep readers up long into the night. Check out the review below and pick up your copy of RECOVERED now!

My Review: Holy. Friggin'. Crap! This book, guys. I'm not sure I have the necessary vocabulary range to properly express how much I LOVED this. Enemies to lovers is a classic tale, but this book is anything but. I've been a fan of Jay Crownover since just before Rome was released, and this book is my new favorite. It is simultaneously both so her, and so new and different and just.. amazing.

Recovered gave me all the feels. It's been a while since a book made me outwardly emote - I might smile now and then, or frown, but it's not so noticeable. I actually had coworkers ask me if I was okay while I was reading this, because my emotions were all over the place... and apparently all over my face. I was moved, to say the least. Affton and Cable are my new favorite Crownover couple, but it's Cable that really steals the show. He's just so... so.. sexy, vulnerable, hurt, and amazing.

Cover Lovin': This might be my favorite Jay Crownover cover yet!

Recommendation: Read it now, now, now!

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!!! Seriously, this might be my new favorite Jay Crownover book. Buy it now!

It was hate at first sight......

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user…and an addict.

He was out of control and didn’t bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire.

I was infatuated with her, but that didn’t stop me from acting like she didn’t exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold onto it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

Review: BEARD IN MIND by Penny Reid!

BEARD IN MIND BT BANNER.jpg

My Review: This is my first Winston brothers book, and oh man, why the heck did I wait??? Let me start by saying I had absolutely no clue what I was getting into. I guess, due to the cutesy covers and amusing titles, I assumed these would be super lighthearted and just generally adorable. And sure, there were definitely some moments of both of those, but this book is so much  more, so much DEEPER than I ever expected. Beau is dealing with some seriously tough emotional upheavals,  and Shelly has her own mental illness to work through. And huge kudos to the author for clearly putting in so much effort and research into Shelly 's disorder.

I am not ashamed to say this book make me a little emotionally unstable. To be honest, there was a time or two I was almost moved to tears. This book is so... real. I could feel Beau's anguish over his twin leaving, over Shelly's reaction to everything he did. And Shelly herself.. I'm not sure I have the right words to express everything I felt for her, and with her.

This is not my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. But it might be my favorite. I already had the rest of this series on my to read list.. clearly they need to be bumped to the very top.

Cover Lovin': This may be my first Winston brothers book, but I've always loved the covers.

Recommendation: While the brothers pay a big role in each others' lives, this can be read as a stand alone.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! This book more than deserves a perfect score. It was emotionally moving, and I absolutely could not put it down. It deserves to be added to your to buy list immediately!!

Happy Reading!

Beard in Mind, an all new standalone in the bestselling, romantic comedy Winston Brothers Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!

BIM-cover (2)
All is fair in love and auto maintenance.
Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.
Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket.
Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever.
She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words.
Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life.
The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean losing what matters most.

Excerpt:

She’d taken the sofa, in her own house, and given me the bed. That didn’t make a lick of sense. I crouched next to her, threading my fingers into the silky hair at her temples. “Honey.” “Mmm.” I bent to whisper, “Shelly.” “Hmm?” “I’m going to carry you to your bed. I’ll take the sofa.” “Mmm.” I grinned at her soft noises, at the untroubled expression on her face, and how her brow—even in sleep—still looked regal and stern. Sliding my arms under her legs and shoulder, I picked her up. And, unfortunately, that woke her up. She jerked in my arms. “What are you doing?” “I’m taking you to the bed.” “Don’t do that.” “I don’t mind, I’ll take the sofa.” Our mouths were just inches apart, and hers was distracting. She squirmed. “Put me down.” Sighing unhappily, I did. I set her on her feet next to the couch. The blanket pooled at her feet and I stepped back to give her some space. It was dark, but I could see her just fine, and that meant I had to force my eyes to remain above her neck. The woman was wearing two pathetic scraps of fabric as pajamas. A thin little tank top and shorts. That’s it. I set my jaw and turned to the side, waiting for her to walk past. “Where are you?” I glanced at her and realized she couldn’t see at all. She didn’t have a hand out, but the way her eyes were moving about the room gave away her blindness. “I’m here.” I didn’t touch her, because if I did, I wouldn’t want to stop. Shelly turned her head in my direction and took a deep breath. Still she didn’t reach for me. I didn’t know the specifics of what to expect after her Friday session, but I recalled Dr. West saying something about Shelly doing self-guided ERP exercises over this week. “Can you see?” She licked her lips, her voice sandpapery. “Because I can’t see at all. It’s so dark.” “I can see.” Unbidden, my eyes dropped to her body, to the swell of her breasts, the panel of bare stomach, the curve of her hips. Pinpricks of heat raised over my skin and I curled my hands into fists. She shuffled forward and I caught her before she bumped into me, setting my hands gently at her waist. “Let me take you to your room.” My voice was rough, for obvious reasons. Saying nothing, she brought her hand to my forearm, her body gently colliding with mine. And then her hand on my arm slid up my bicep to my shoulder. “Shelly.” I was running out of breath. “I like this.” “What?” “Touching you.” Oh fuck. I held still and endured her hands moving over my body, down the front of my shirt, stopping at the hem, then pushing it up. “Take this off.” I did. I pulled the T-shirt over my head and let it drop to the floor. We stood there, facing each other in the dark, not touching. Despite the session on Friday and the progress that had been made, I realized she wasn’t quite there yet. Dr. West was right, Friday was just a step, the first step. Shelly wasn’t able to initiate contact. Not yet. Her hands balled into fists and she swayed forward, her breath struggling little puffs. If anything was going to happen tonight, I had to initiate it. I had to be the one to touch first. God, how I wanted her. How I wanted her above me, beneath me, surrounding me. But how could I? “I know why I hesitate,” her voice was breathless, “but why do you hesitate?” “Lots of reasons.” “Give me one.” “I don’t want to you use you.” “I wish you would.” That pulled a laugh from me, just a small relief from the mounting tension. My eyes moved over her body, an undeniable impulse to devour the sight of her, her legs, stomach, chest, then up her neck to her lips. “You asked me on Saturday if sex was a big deal for me, or if it was you. The answer is both.” She held very still, and I got the sense she was holding her breath, straining to listen. “You are a big deal to me. I don’t want a fling. I don’t want a flirtation. I want promises.” “What can I promise you?” That you’ll love me. That I’ll be your priority. She shifted her weight from foot to foot. A spike of anxiety that she might leave me like this had me acting without forethought. I lifted my hands to her waist again and immediately, her fingertips skimmed over skin of my lower stomach in response, making my muscles tense in hot anticipation. She grew more assertive as she caressed my sides, abdomen, ribs, chest, shoulders, and then back down. Shelly stepped closer, a hint of thrilling contact between her breasts and my torso, and all the words and worries melted from my mind, died on my tongue, suffocated by the feel of her body, and the possibility of this moment. Her finger hooked in the waistband of my jeans. “Take these off.” Her hand turned, her fingers and palm cupping me over my zipper. Instinctively, I pressed myself into her touch even as I grabbed her wrist. “Beau, I promise—” She didn’t get to speak, because I kissed her, hard and wild, unbuttoning and unzipping my fly with one hand and bringing her palm inside my boxers with the other.
