Weekly Reading Update 9/16 - 9/22/16!

Another week, another update… As always, click the title for more information!

I didn’t get too much reading done this week - mostly re-reads because I’m still in a bit of a reading slump. It’s not that the stuff I have to read and review is bad, it’s just I’m not in the mood to do anything. And when I finally got myself back on track and ready to read, my landlord told me an appraiser would need to do a walk-through of my house the next day, so I had to hurry and clean my house. It wasn’t too bad, really, there were just books EVERYWHERE. Thank goodness that’s over.

I did read Rocket Raccoon & Groot, Volume 1: Tricks of the Trade by Skottie Young. This is one of those fun, light-hearted graphic novels. Great for reading in between the heavy stuff. Rocket and Groot are always good for a laugh, and this volume was no different. Following this, I read King Baby by Kate Beaton. Kate Beaton has an awesome sense of humor, and I love all her books - picture books included. King Baby was no exception, that’s for sure.

On the re-reading front, I plowed my way through the Stage Dive series by Kylie Scott. The third book is one of my all-time favorites, but I figured I might as well start from the beginning since it had been so long since I read David and Mal’s stories. If you haven’t read this series, you need to get on it, ASAP. It’s my favorite New Adult rock star series to date. Lick, Play, Lead, and Deep - add them to your TBR or wish-list now!

Continuing my re-read binge, and sticking with the general rock star vibe (sort of?) I read Rule and Jet by Jay Crownover, another favorite author. Jet may be a rock star, at least on a smaller scale, but Rule just generally acts like one. Now that I think about it, I might have picked this series back up because I’ve been ready to get my next tattoo. I have the design, just not the time. It doesn’t help that this is conference season for work, as well as festival season - and it’s rough trying to keep a tattoo clean at muddy festival grounds.

That’s it for me this week. Next week will either be skipped, or late - since I will be out of town at a conference for work at the end of the week. And with being upstate, w

ho knows if I’ll even be able to read much. Such a depressing though.

Weekly Reading Update 7/1 - 7/7/16!

Another week, another update! As always, click the title for more information.

Since tomorrow (Friday) already has some scheduled posts, I figured I will do my Weekly Reading Update on Thursday instead. Because I’m sure you’re just all desperate to find out what I read, right? Yeaaaah.

So I mostly did a lot of re-reading, honestly. Because of the holiday weekend, I had some freetime - so I went back through the Masters of the Shadowlands series, and re-read Dan’s book (Dark Citadel), Cullen’s book (Lean On Me), and Marcus’ book (Make Me, Sir). And then I continued on to read If Only, which is Sally’s story. I really love this series. Cherise Sinclair is a fantastic writer, and boy… her heroes are hot, hot, hot. I still need to read Raoul’s story (To Command and Collar), and I’d like to re-read Sam’s story as well (This Is Who I Am). I’ll have to buy Sam’s book at some point - that is the only one I’m missing aside from the brand new one (Protecting His Own).

The saga of the Unfinished Heroes series by Kristen Ashley continues this week - I read book four, Deacon. As I’ve said many times before, this series frustrates me. I don’t like them, really. But after I finish them, I can’t stop thinking about them. I’ll admit, the sex scenes are hot. But the characters, and the way they talk? I find it very annoying. But Deacon was actually really good. I didn’t hate it upon finishing - I enjoyed it. I might actually buy it! But that doesn’t mean too much, because I bought Knight and I kind of hated that one… but I felt like I had to keep re-reading it for some reason. Ugh.

On re-reading old favorites - are they as good the second (or millionth) time around?

When I'm feeling down, or stressed, or just in a grumpy mood - I re-read some of my favorite books (or series!). You may have noticed something like that in last week's Weekly Reading Update - since I was working my way through the Princess Diaries series.

I guess I like the feeling of returning to a familiar world, seeing some familiar "faces" (or what I imagine them to look like, anyways!), and knowing what kind of ending I'm getting into. And I just figured that was something everyone also enjoyed. But apparently not!

A friend of mine once told me she rarely re-reads books. She already knows what's going to happen, so why bother reading them again? The magic is gone.

But is it? I don't think so. In re-reading a book, I always pick up on things that I missed the first time around. When you're first reading a book, you're picking up clues here and there to the ending, but so much gets lost because you're not sure what you're looking for. A reader is mostly paying attention to the main story, and all the little subtle things fall through the cracks.

But when you re-read... you can finally catch them! It just adds so much to the story. Also, at least for me, it really does feel like coming home. I generally stick with certain authors for re-reads, but every so often I get incredibly nostalgic and go for ones I read years and years ago. Some examples? The Princess Diaries series and the Jessica Darling series. I often toss the Georgia Nicolson books as well, since I read them all around the same time, so they are forever stuck together in my mind.

But what about everyone else? Am I just a crazy person for loving to re-read old favorites? It just always feels so comforting.
