Review: WICKED TORTURE by J. Kenner!
This was a one sitting read for me. I couldn't put it down because I had to get that happily ever after. I needed Kiki and Noah to truly be together after all the years apart. I won't give away any spoilers, but I have to just say one of the reveals at the end left me a little bit disgruntled.. But the rest of the book was so good it barely registered. I just think it could have been handled better, or written with a more interesting twist.
I will have to search out the rest of this "series" of stand alones, because this book reminded me how much I love this author!
Cover Lovin': Yum!
Recommendation: While previous J. Kenner heroes are mentioned, this can be read as a stand alone.
Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!!! One sitting read for sure! The heartbreak was real, the love scenes were hot, and I couldn't get enough of Noah and Kiki!

Weekly Reading Update 7/15 - 7/21!
Another week, another update! As always, click the title for more information.
Man, with all the staff shortages at work, I’m exhausted! And alas, that doesn’t translate to quiet, relaxing nights at home - nope, I spend that night worrying about the next day. Also, Saturday was my birthday, so I might have had a few birthday celebrations, but the evenings out spent with friends and family was more than worth the lack of reading time. I wasn’t a total slouch, though!

Finally, I also read Dirtiest Secret by J. Kenner. I actually read this on Sunday (the 17th), so that I could read and review Hottest Mess as part of J. Kenner’s blog tour. The first book moved a little slow for me, so it did take me some time - I took quite a few breaks. But man, the second book dives right in. I also attempted to read The Angel Knights by Mary Ting, a young adult paranormal novella - I had to DNF it. And as someone who loves angels, it hurt, let me tell you.
See you next week!
Happy Reading!

Review: HOTTEST MESS by J. Kenner!
Release Date: July 12th, 2016
My Review: First off, let me say I read books one and two back-to-back, and I highly suggest that for any interested readers, because book two picks up right where book one left off. This makes it a very fluid transition from one to the other. And I will probably find myself re-reading book two before starting book three - because I will be desperately seeking book three when it releases. For me, book one felt a bit like walking through syrup - it's not that the book was bad, it just felt slow. Book two had none of those issues - I breezed through Hottest Mess, and couldn't put it down. I don't know if the pacing was better in the second book, or what, but it was a lot smoother.
It's hard to just review the second book, considering this is a trilogy and they're all so tied together, but I will do my best. I know this series is supposed to be a romance, and love is definitely a big factor, but for me, this feels more like a dark suspense than anything. I care far more about Dallas and Deliverance than I do about Dallas and Jane's relationship. And I have my suspicions about who The Woman is, but part of me hopes I'm wrong. This reminds me a little of Asking For It, by Lilah Pace - not the story, but the general tone of the book. And that's not a bad thing, the Lilah Pace books were amazingly well done. My heart breaks for what happened to Dallas and Jane - but especially Dallas, who suffered more (and longer) than Jane did. And I think this book does well showing how trauma suffered in adolescence can affect you in adulthood.
Cover Lovin': Fits well with the first book in the series.
Recommendation: This is a direct sequel, the middle of a trilogy, so you will want to read book 1, Dirtiest Secret, first. And be on the lookout for book 3, Sweetest Taboo coming October 2016!
Final Rating: I'm going to go with THREE AND A HALF out of FIVE stars (3.5/5) on this one. The pacing was better than book one, but I'm marking it down some because the romance just feels like sex and shame/awkwardness, not a true driving factor. It seems like the real story is the kidnapping, which should be a subplot (a major one, but still).
Disclaimer: I received a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The S.I.N. series continues with the seductive follow-up to the Stark International Novel Dirtiest Secret, from the New York Times bestselling author of “red-hot and angsty” fiction that “keeps readers guessing” (Publishers Weekly, on Under My Skin).
No one can know about our love—and hiding only makes it hotter.
Dallas Sykes has a reputation. He is known for his parties, his money, and the countless women on his arm. Yet the Dallas I know is a different man—darker, smarter, and unbearably sexy. Just one look from him can leave me breathless; the anticipation of his touch can make me lose control.
Inextricably bound by our past, we keep each other’s secrets. And while there are people who have the power to hurt us, it’s the truth that threatens us most of all.
Dallas can be mine only behind closed doors, our passion as searing as it is forbidden. Yet nothing in this world has ever felt so desperately, deliciously right.
Hottest Mess is intended for mature audiences.
From the New York Times bestselling author of such “racy, sizzling Stark novels” (RT Book Reviews) as Release Me and Say My Name comes the provocative first Stark International Novel—the beginning of the S.I.N. series.
It was wrong for us to be together, but it was even harder to be apart.
The memory of Dallas Sykes burns inside of me.
Everyone knows him as a notorious playboy, a man for whom women and money are no object. But to me, he’s still the one man I desperately crave—yet the one I can never have.
Dallas knows me better than anyone else. We bear the same scars, the same darkness in our past. I thought I could move on by staying away, but now that we’re drawn together once more, I can’t fight the force of our attraction or the temptation to make him mine.
We’ve tried to maintain control, not letting ourselves give in to desire. And for so long we’ve told ourselves no—but now it’s finally time to say yes.
Dirtiest Secret is intended for mature audiences.

Review: UNDER MY SKIN by J. Kenner
Release Date: September 1st, 2015
Type: Trilogy, Book three, Last Book, Series, Contemporary Romance, Alpha Rich Boy
About the Book: Jackson Steele is my light in this world. Charismatic, bold, and always in control, he knows what he wants and how to get it—and absolutely nothing stands in his way. His hold on me is magnetic, his claim on me complete, his kiss my ultimate escape.
We both harbor dark secrets that could tear our lives apart. Though we’ve tried to bury our pasts, there are certain people who won’t let us forget. But the closer danger comes, the brighter the fire between us burns—our ecstasy consuming and soothing us both.
There’s no telling what lies ahead, but I know that Jackson never gives in without a fight. I’d do anything he wants to keep him safe, give him anything he needs. And now that we’re in deep, nothing can make me run. [Description from the back cover]
My Review: This is the final book in the Stark International trilogy, and author J. Kenner is not skimping on the drama. Every plot twist is another punch in the couple's chance at happily ever after, and be warned - the drama and rampant emotions can make the reader a little exhausted right along with Jackson and Sylvia.
One thing I really liked about this series is that it is consistent. That may seem like a ridiculous thing to say, but think about it - if you have a series and each book has a different feel, it doesn't feel cohesive as a whole. But J. Kenner knows how to write a trilogy (it seems to be her thing, after all) - so she knows what she's doing. Jackson and Sylvia grow throughout the series, but they still remain themselves, no matter what life throws at them - and I greatly appreciate that.
And now on to what I thought was a little difficult about this book - there were several loose ends that have been trailing throughout the series. And while the author does wrap everything up nicely, it just feels like there was so much packed into this last book. Maybe that's why I felt so exhausted while reading it - all the drama, all the ending of it... it was just so much in one moderately-sized book. I'm not saying the book should be longer - just that maybe one less bit of drama would have served it better as a whole.
All of that said, I really did enjoy this book, and the trilogy as a whole. I never read the original Stark Trilogy, and I do hope to one day. And the teaser for her next series in the back of "Under My Skin" shows a lot of promise as well.
Cover Lovin': Fits perfectly with the rest of the series, so it gets a thumbs up for sure.
Recommendation: Interested readers definitely need to pick up books one and two before attempting this one.
Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5). Great ending to a series, but it almost seemed like there was too much jam packed into the last book.

My review of book two: On My Knees

About UNDER MY SKIN
Jackson Steele and Sylvia Brooks are back in the powerful finale of a provocative, sizzling-hot new erotic trilogy set in the world of J. Kenner’s beloved Stark novels: Release Me, Claim Me, andComplete Me.
He’s the only man I’ve ever loved, and the one man I can’t bear to lose.

Excerpt: “Take off your clothes.”
I
shake my head.
His
brow quirks just slightly. “Take off your clothes.” This time, each word is
stressed.
I
lick my lips. “No.”
The
corner of his mouth twitches, and he stands up slowly. “No?”
I
meet his eyes defiantly. “I thought you were taking what you wanted.”
“I
am,” he says. “What I want is your submission.”
“Oh.”
I
see a flash of victory in his eyes before he starts to walk away. “Decide how
you want to play the game, sweetheart. But know that I’m only willing to play
by my rules.”
He
is almost to the steps that lead back to the deck when I call out to him. He
turns, his brow raised in silent query.
I
slip off my ballet flats. And then, as he slowly walks back toward me, I peel
myself out of my jeans, taking my underwear with them. He reaches down, then
uses the tip of his finger to lift them off the deck of the boat. “Lace. Very
nice.”
“I’m
glad you approve.” My voice sounds breathy. I’m standing there in only a
T-shirt and bra. The window facing the ocean is open, and the cool night air
teases me until I am right there on the edge, waiting to go over, and wanting
that push so badly that I’m not sure I can survive the anticipation.

Blog Tour; REVIEW: "On My Knees" by J. Kenner!
Disclaimer: I received a free, advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Release Date: June 23rd, 2015
Type: Contemporary Romance, Series, Book Two, Yummy, Controlling men, Erotic, Oh My...
About the Book: Jackson Steele and Sylvia Brooks continue to thrill in the second novel of a scintillating, emotionally charged new trilogy that returns to the world of J. Kenner’s beloved Stark novels: Release Me, Claim Me, and Complete Me.
I never thought I’d lose control, but his desire took me right to the edge.
Powerful, ambitious, and devastatingly sexy, Jackson Steele was unlike any other man I’d ever known. He went after what he wanted with his whole mind, body, and soul—and I was the woman in his sights. One touch and I surrendered, one night together and I was undone.
Jackson and I had secrets, dark pieces of our pasts that threatened to swallow us both. We couldn’t outrun our demons, or the people trying to tear us apart. But in our passion we found salvation, and in each other’s arms we found release.
I was scared to trust Jackson fully, to finally let go. Yet no matter the dangers that lay ahead, I knew I was his—and now that we’ve laid claim, there’s no more holding back.
On My Knees is intended for mature audiences. [Synopsis from Goodreads.com]
My Review: In a lot of ways, I liked this book better than the first one. While it was great seeing the characters get together in book one, I liked it even better watching them weather the storms life was throwing at them. And boy were there a lot of storms. Sylvia got mad at Jackson at least three times throughout the story, and would just blow things far out of proportion. And even if she was legitimately upset about something (yes, a few of the instances I would have been very mad too!), she forgave way too easily. Not only did she forgive, it seemed like she quickly forgot about it and moved on, which just felt realistic. Of course, I am a huge drama fan, so I wanted the arguments to blow up a little more. Or maybe have one big epic fight instead of several small-but-still-the-end-of-my-world fights.
Now on to what I liked about the book. It's mostly Jackson. Long time readers of this blog know how much I like my men on the controlling side - and Jackson is juuuust right. He knows how to apologize when he does something wrong. Yes, he has his secrets, but he makes sure to tell Sylvia that there are some secrets that will be revealed as time goes on. Which makes sense, and felt real - even when you fall in love with someone, you don't tell them absolutely everything right away.
This series is very compelling, and definitely good one-sitting reads. It was hard putting my kindle down to go to work, and all I could think about was what was going to happen next! And I think once I finish the Stark International Trilogy, I will have to go back and read the books that started it all, The Stark Trilogy, featuring Damien.
Cover Lovin': Oh goodness, this cover. Definitely something that caught my eye! And fits well with the first book in the series, Say My Name (see my review HERE).
Recommendation: Read this if you like your men hot! And controlling. But definitely read the first book in the series, as this is a direct continuation.
Final Rating: THREE POINT FIVE out of FIVE stars. I like this better than the first one - because I am all about the drama. But it started to feel like one fight after another, drama for drama's sake, rather than plot. But I need the next book NOW!

EXCERPT
“I need you to tell me, baby. How should I touch you to get you there? Tell me what you want. Tell me what turns you on.” My cheeks burn, which is ridiculous considering how open I am to him at this moment. But I can’t help it. “Tell me,” he says, stepping closer. “Or have none of it.” My eyes cut to him. “Cruel, Mr. Steele?” “I can be. Or I can be very, very kind.” As he speaks, he moves his fingertip over my body. Literally over it, by about two inches. So that while I can imagine his touch, I do not get to experience it. Even so, it seems to me like he is leaving a trail of heat in his wake. All that does, though, is drive home how much I will be missing if he doesn’t touch me for real.About J. Kenner

J. Kenner's Blog Tour: REVIEW of "Say My Name"
Disclaimer: I received a free, advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review as part of J. Kenner's blog tour.
Release Date: April 14th, 2015
Type: Romance, Contemporary Romance, Series, Book one, Erotic, Yummy Covers
About the Book: I never let anyone get too close—but he's the only man who's ever made me feel alive.
Meeting Jackson Steele was a shock to my senses. Confident and commanding, he could take charge of any room . . . or any woman. And Jackson wanted me. The mere sight of him took my breath away, and his touch made me break all my rules.
Our bond was immediate, our passion untamed. I wanted to surrender completely to his kiss, but I couldn't risk his knowing the truth about my past. Yet Jackson carried secrets too, and in our desire we found our escape, pushing our boundaries as far as they could go.
Learning to trust is never easy. In my mind, I knew I should run. But in my heart, I never felt a fire this strong—and it could either save me or scorch me forever.
Say My Name is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences. [Description provided by Netgalley.com]
My Review: Man, I was not prepared for how sexy this was! Let me just say, I wouldn't toss Jackson Steele out of my life if he walked in. I may have fanned myself more than a few times while reading "Say My Name" - and if author J. Kenner's other novels are on par with this one, I will definitely be looking at more.
There was a time or two I got confused about whether we were in the past or present, but that is my only real critique. I greatly enjoyed the story. The big climax at the end was a little predictable, it was still original enough that I thought Kenner gave an old trick a new spin.
While this may be part of a series, I can say for sure that this can be read as a stand-alone. Past characters show up in this novel, but no prior knowledge of the author's other works is necessary to enjoy "Say My Name." However, I'm sure you, like me, will be hunting down the author's other works in no time!
Cover Lovin': Whoa boy, I have nothing bad to say about this cover. Definitely two thumbs up!
Recommendation: Definitely for those that like a lot of steamy stuff in their romances. 18+
Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE (4/5) stars! Very hot, and very fun - a must read!

Excerpt
“You really think you can come back after all this time and bat your lashes and have me fall backward over myself to help you out?” “It’s not like that. I—” “And for him—for Damien Stark? We’re done, princess,” he says, lifting a finger toward my face. “You told me to leave, sweetheart. And five years later you fall back into my life. And pretty goddamn dramatically, too.” I lick my lips. “It’s just business.” “The hell it is.” I hear the sharp edge of emotion in his voice, as dangerous as a well-honed blade. The fight is obvious on his face, as well, and I press back against the car, wishing I could disappear through the metal. He’s fire and fury, and I have no idea what he is going to do. All I know is that all that passion is directed toward me, and that no matter what happens, I won’t leave this parking lot unscathed. I see it in his eyes first—a quick flash of wildness before his hand lashes out and his palm slams hard against the Lexus. Then he pulls me close, and I don’t even have time to think before his mouth closes over mine. The kiss is violent. Wild and desperate. And when I gasp, he takes advantage, thrusting his tongue into my mouth as one hand holds my head and the other slides up my chest to cup my breast. He deepens the kiss, claiming me with such intensity that I know I would not be standing were it not for his hands upon me.About J. Kenner
