Review: COME CLOSER by Brenda Rothert!

My Review: Do you ever pick up a book because the synopsis sounds fairly interesting and you're willing to give something different a shot... and then the book BLOWS YOUR MIND? Well, if you haven't, then you definitely need to read this book because trust me, you'll experience it. I think I picked this book because I was interested in the whole "forbidden" love story. A doctor and his patient? That's very naughty - and, therefore, caught my interest. But this book is so much more than that, and it's so much better than I could have expected. 

I probably should wait a while before writing this review, because I just finished the book and all I want to do is gush. But I can't help it, I have to get my feelings out right now. I loved this, 100%. Maybe the whole confessing their love happened a bit too fast for my taste, but the story itself? I was losing my mind. I was almost late going back to work from my lunch break because I couldn't put this down. And I picked it back up the second I got home, despite the fact that I needed to make dinner. What's the point of dinner when time spent with a good book is just as fulfilling?!

I'll admit it, I read a lot of books because I like the smutty scenes. This wasn't one of those books. Oh sure, the sexy scenes were hot, but instead of taking my time and savoring them - I kept up my speed-reading pace because I absolutely had to know what was going to happen. I know in the author's note Brenda Rothert mentioned this book is different than her usual work - but if this magic is what she's capable of? Consider me her newest number one fan. 

Cover Lovin': Very well done. I'd definitely be hooked.

Recommendation: Stand-alone. And you should definitely enjoy some suspense with your romance.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)! Couldn't put it down, and fully lost myself in the story from beginning to end. Seriously, I got hooked at 2%, and I didn't see the rest of the world until I got to the very last page. Highly recommended.

    The Perils and Joys of Research

I got the idea for a trilogy set in Seattle as I worked on my Alaska Trilogy.  Nick Brodie needed a place to work and live, so I created Brodie Operations Security Services, BOSS Inc, the guys called it. 

In the office, I put two more Brodies, cousin Ethan and cousin Luke.  INTO THE FIRESTORM is Luke Brodie’s story.  What made it fun and interesting was the twist it took during the research phase. 

Luke Brodie is a bounty hunter.  A fat $600,000 is the 20% bail enforcement fee he'll collect if he brings in international criminal, Rudy Vance. 

Emma Sullivan is also hunting Vance.  It's been almost a year since she arrived at her sister's home to find the housekeeper murdered and her young niece the victim of Vance's sick assault. 

Emma is determined to find Vance and make him pay.  And no one--not even the infamous Luke Brodie--is going to stop her.

There was plenty of story to work with, but as I was developing the plot, I stumbled across an interesting tidbit.  Turns out there is a group in Seattle called the Yakuza, an organization often referred to as the Japanese Mafia.

What caught my eye was that members of the group are completely tattooed--even their genitals!  I thought, wow, wouldn’t they make interesting bad guys?

So the thing about research is that it can twist your story in unexpected directions.  It’s difficult but the results can be astonishing.

Excerpt from: “Chapter Five – I’ll Take Hell if Purgatory Is Anything Like This”

Sitting at a small table in the corner was a tiny shift of a girl I’d encountered once before.

The encounter had not gone well.

I’d tried to hit on her and she’d not only rebuffed me, but she’d insulted me repeatedly and without reason. It was just my luck to run into Fiona Pierce on what happened to be one of the shittiest mornings I’d had in a long while.

Unable to cease being a member of the male species, I looked her over and despite her diminutive size and overall insulting tone, I still found her to be physically appealing. What can I say? I own a penis.

She has delicate features but huge green eyes and light blond hair that falls around her shoulders and sweeps over her forehead. It’s almost as if an ever-present breeze accompanies her wherever she goes, causing her hair to float around her face in constant motion. There was just…something about her, some hint of fire I’d noticed the very first time I’d spotted her across Laney’s backyard. It was the very thing that had propelled me toward the deck where she’d been standing, where I’d then proceeded to bomb in a most spectacular fashion. That had been the day after Thanksgiving and I hadn’t seen her in the months since.
