Review: BLADE by Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright!

My Review: I like to think of this book as chocolate lava cake - it's sweet, gooey, and totally filling... And lacking any nutritional value. Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying this book is bad, because it is definitely not. I'm saying it's fun. Just, not too deep. I've read several of these Pantera books now, and each one hits the spot when I need a good, classic, cheesy shifter romance.

These authors have created a fantastic paranormal world. It's unique, unlike any other shifter series I've come across. And the big bad of the series is a perfect evil villain. He's the type of bad guy you love to hate, and makes you cheer for the hero that much more.

Blade is another perfect example of a delicious Pantera male. Sexy, strong, protective, and loyal. I'd love to find a Blade of my own, to be sure. I wish these books were a little longer, because I would love some more scenes of just the hero and heroine falling in love.

Cover Lovin': A classic 1001 Dark Nights cover.

Recommendation: At least a little familiarity with the series is recommended, but the authors do a good job catching new readers up.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)! A fast, fun, flirty read. Perfect for paranormal romance addicts!

Alexandra Ivy is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Alexandra: “I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on. Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold! I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Laura Wright is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Laura: “Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.”

Exclusive Excerpt: Regret is a strange thing. It can be powerful, so crippling it will knock a man to his knees, or so soft and insidious it’s like a slow-drip poison in the mind. On any given day, I feel both sensations. Not for the decision I made, but for what it cost every single one of the men on the team that day. The truth changed each of us. Not one of us, had we known, would choose to bear this burden. But now that we’ve seen behind the magic curtain, it’s too late to go back. Troy is gone. And since time travel isn’t an option... My six years of war have ended, and I don’t feel like I belong in a suburban home, any more than I belong in this strange echo of a previous life I am destined to live. But now I’m home, back in Texas, with my sister making a fuss upstairs and everything I own in a handful of boxes on her basement floor. The house, the town, the sights and the sounds; none of it has changed, but I have. I could never be the same man I’d been when I left. Standing here, with sunlight streaming in through the windows and the smell of the neighbor’s barbecue filling the air of my sister’s immaculate, 100 year old craftsman style home with a porch that seems to stretch for miles, Americana reigns. I half expect a little girl named Betty June to ride up on her Schwinn bicycle, sporting pigtails and bobbysocks, to sell me a ticket to an ice cream social. I am so far removed from what happened in that cave in the mountains of Afghanistan that I should be relieved. Happy. Content. Not haunted by the ghost of a man the entire world believes to be dead. It’s not his fault, but I resent him, just a little, for the weight of the secret we all now carry. Then again, I can walk down the street, eat at a restaurant and drive a car without constantly looking over my shoulder. It’s hard to hate a guy, a good man who can never go home again, when he has a target on his back. “Daniel, are all of the boxes out of the truck?” My sister Sara’s voice echoes down the stairway, to the harsh surfaces of the finished basement as I bend over the last box, squinting to read the handwriting on the lid. The words looked something like “Iesh,” which probably meant they were Josh’s things. No one can read his handwriting without a magic de-coder ring. “Yeah, I got the last of them,” I call out. Everything I own is in this room, and some things I wish I didn’t. The package that arrived yesterday from Italy with no return address? I haven’t opened it yet. I know who it’s from and I know what it will bring to my life. Chaos. Risk. Secrets. More secrets. Shoving it into the bottom of my duffel bag, I head back up the ancient wood stairs. Painted lime green and scuffed from years of footfalls, they creak with every step. Standing at the top of the stairs, Sara brushes her hands on her jeans then crosses her arms while she awaits my ascent. “I guess the nice thing about you military guys is that you don’t have a ton of stuff lying around.” “That’s one way to look at it.” I left everything behind. Most of the stuff on the floor downstairs had been in storage the last few years, since the day I shipped out. I’m not even sure I’ll open the boxes. Everything I need to survive is in my oversized duffel bag next to the bed. Everything I need to survive, and the one secret that might cost me everything, including the one woman I’ve never been able to forget.

Review: THE SOUL MATE by Kendall Ryan!

My Review: Mason can totally be my soul mate. If he's in the market, I'm 100% in. He was fantastic, I even liked his friend Trent. Bren's boss was great as well, but Bren herself.. It was rough for me to figure out how I felt about her while I was reading this book. I thought she had a great sense of humor, as evidenced by her snarky responses to the ice princess quiz. But her distrust of intimacy and her habit of going silent rather than explain her thoughts or feelings... it just made her feel a little like a jerk.

This book just felt so fast. It's on par, lengthwise, with the rest of the series, but it felt like it moved so much quicker than the other books. Due to this, I wasn't as in love with the storyline, because I didn't have that time to really get attached like I wanted. The idea is there, and super strong, it just didn't catch me as much as the previous books.

Cover Lovin': Delish! Fits with the rest of the series.

Recommendation: Each book I'm this series works as a stand alone.

Final Rating: THREE POINT FIVE out of FIVE stars. I had my issues with Bren, and this book moved a little too quickly for me. But Mason more than made up for it. This book might not have hit the spot for me, but I am looking forward to more by this author!

Review: BEARD IN MIND by Penny Reid!

BEARD IN MIND BT BANNER.jpg

My Review: This is my first Winston brothers book, and oh man, why the heck did I wait??? Let me start by saying I had absolutely no clue what I was getting into. I guess, due to the cutesy covers and amusing titles, I assumed these would be super lighthearted and just generally adorable. And sure, there were definitely some moments of both of those, but this book is so much  more, so much DEEPER than I ever expected. Beau is dealing with some seriously tough emotional upheavals,  and Shelly has her own mental illness to work through. And huge kudos to the author for clearly putting in so much effort and research into Shelly 's disorder.

I am not ashamed to say this book make me a little emotionally unstable. To be honest, there was a time or two I was almost moved to tears. This book is so... real. I could feel Beau's anguish over his twin leaving, over Shelly's reaction to everything he did. And Shelly herself.. I'm not sure I have the right words to express everything I felt for her, and with her.

This is not my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. But it might be my favorite. I already had the rest of this series on my to read list.. clearly they need to be bumped to the very top.

Cover Lovin': This may be my first Winston brothers book, but I've always loved the covers.

Recommendation: While the brothers pay a big role in each others' lives, this can be read as a stand alone.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! This book more than deserves a perfect score. It was emotionally moving, and I absolutely could not put it down. It deserves to be added to your to buy list immediately!!

Beard in Mind, an all new standalone in the bestselling, romantic comedy Winston Brothers Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!

BIM-cover (2)
All is fair in love and auto maintenance.
Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually.
Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket.
Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever.
She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words.
Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life.
The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean losing what matters most.

Excerpt:

She’d taken the sofa, in her own house, and given me the bed. That didn’t make a lick of sense. I crouched next to her, threading my fingers into the silky hair at her temples. “Honey.” “Mmm.” I bent to whisper, “Shelly.” “Hmm?” “I’m going to carry you to your bed. I’ll take the sofa.” “Mmm.” I grinned at her soft noises, at the untroubled expression on her face, and how her brow—even in sleep—still looked regal and stern. Sliding my arms under her legs and shoulder, I picked her up. And, unfortunately, that woke her up. She jerked in my arms. “What are you doing?” “I’m taking you to the bed.” “Don’t do that.” “I don’t mind, I’ll take the sofa.” Our mouths were just inches apart, and hers was distracting. She squirmed. “Put me down.” Sighing unhappily, I did. I set her on her feet next to the couch. The blanket pooled at her feet and I stepped back to give her some space. It was dark, but I could see her just fine, and that meant I had to force my eyes to remain above her neck. The woman was wearing two pathetic scraps of fabric as pajamas. A thin little tank top and shorts. That’s it. I set my jaw and turned to the side, waiting for her to walk past. “Where are you?” I glanced at her and realized she couldn’t see at all. She didn’t have a hand out, but the way her eyes were moving about the room gave away her blindness. “I’m here.” I didn’t touch her, because if I did, I wouldn’t want to stop. Shelly turned her head in my direction and took a deep breath. Still she didn’t reach for me. I didn’t know the specifics of what to expect after her Friday session, but I recalled Dr. West saying something about Shelly doing self-guided ERP exercises over this week. “Can you see?” She licked her lips, her voice sandpapery. “Because I can’t see at all. It’s so dark.” “I can see.” Unbidden, my eyes dropped to her body, to the swell of her breasts, the panel of bare stomach, the curve of her hips. Pinpricks of heat raised over my skin and I curled my hands into fists. She shuffled forward and I caught her before she bumped into me, setting my hands gently at her waist. “Let me take you to your room.” My voice was rough, for obvious reasons. Saying nothing, she brought her hand to my forearm, her body gently colliding with mine. And then her hand on my arm slid up my bicep to my shoulder. “Shelly.” I was running out of breath. “I like this.” “What?” “Touching you.” Oh fuck. I held still and endured her hands moving over my body, down the front of my shirt, stopping at the hem, then pushing it up. “Take this off.” I did. I pulled the T-shirt over my head and let it drop to the floor. We stood there, facing each other in the dark, not touching. Despite the session on Friday and the progress that had been made, I realized she wasn’t quite there yet. Dr. West was right, Friday was just a step, the first step. Shelly wasn’t able to initiate contact. Not yet. Her hands balled into fists and she swayed forward, her breath struggling little puffs. If anything was going to happen tonight, I had to initiate it. I had to be the one to touch first. God, how I wanted her. How I wanted her above me, beneath me, surrounding me. But how could I? “I know why I hesitate,” her voice was breathless, “but why do you hesitate?” “Lots of reasons.” “Give me one.” “I don’t want to you use you.” “I wish you would.” That pulled a laugh from me, just a small relief from the mounting tension. My eyes moved over her body, an undeniable impulse to devour the sight of her, her legs, stomach, chest, then up her neck to her lips. “You asked me on Saturday if sex was a big deal for me, or if it was you. The answer is both.” She held very still, and I got the sense she was holding her breath, straining to listen. “You are a big deal to me. I don’t want a fling. I don’t want a flirtation. I want promises.” “What can I promise you?” That you’ll love me. That I’ll be your priority. She shifted her weight from foot to foot. A spike of anxiety that she might leave me like this had me acting without forethought. I lifted my hands to her waist again and immediately, her fingertips skimmed over skin of my lower stomach in response, making my muscles tense in hot anticipation. She grew more assertive as she caressed my sides, abdomen, ribs, chest, shoulders, and then back down. Shelly stepped closer, a hint of thrilling contact between her breasts and my torso, and all the words and worries melted from my mind, died on my tongue, suffocated by the feel of her body, and the possibility of this moment. Her finger hooked in the waistband of my jeans. “Take these off.” Her hand turned, her fingers and palm cupping me over my zipper. Instinctively, I pressed myself into her touch even as I grabbed her wrist. “Beau, I promise—” She didn’t get to speak, because I kissed her, hard and wild, unbuttoning and unzipping my fly with one hand and bringing her palm inside my boxers with the other.

Review: ROYALLY ENDOWED by Emma Chase!

My Review: Excuse me, I have to go add this book to my all time favorites shelf. And I have to add Logan to my book boyfriend list, right next to Nicholas and Henry. I loved the first book in this series, and then book two came along, and I was sure I loved that one more. And now here's book three, threatening to take over... But none of them will really win because I love all three equally. This series is absolutely fantastic, and has be beyond addicted. I already had to go back and reread a few of my favorite scenes.

Emma Chase knows how go craft a fun, but meaningful story. As lighthearted as this book can get, it never feels frivolous. Sure, I saw the ending coming from a mile away, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the ride there, or that I wasn't worried about exactly how it would play out. After three books, these characters mean something to me. This author has made me fall in love with a fictional royal family, and I'm a little sad they aren't real, if I'm being honest.

This story takes place over years, and you can really feel the connection grow over time. The author does an extremely good job juggling the huge time jumps along with budding attraction. Moving forward months, or years, at a time doesn't detract from the romance itself, and actually feels natural rather than rushed. Also, I'm a huge sucker for a good family dynamic, and I get that in spades in this book. They're a close knit family, protective of each other, and I love that to pieces.

Cover Lovin': Yum, for sure. And fits wonderfully with the rest of the series.

Recommendation: This can technically work as a stand alone, but I suggest picking up the rest of the series as well since all the characters are so closely involved with one another.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! Another amazing book by Emma Chase. It has well earned it's place on my favorites shelf, and I can't wait to revisit the whole series. I feel a massive reread coming on.

Happy Reading!

Logan St. James is a smoldering, sexy beast. Sure, he can be a little broody at times—but Ellie Hammond’s willing to overlook that. Because, have you seen him??

Sexy. As. Hell.

And Ellie’s perky enough for both of them.

For years, she’s had a crush on the intense, protective royal security guard—but she doesn’t think he ever saw her, not really.

To Logan, Ellie was just part of the job—a relative of the royal family he’d sworn to protect. Now, at 22 years old and fresh out of college, she’s determined to put aside her X-rated dreams of pat-downs and pillow talk, and find a real life happily ever after.

The Queen of Wessco encourages Ellie to follow in her sister’s footsteps and settle down with a prince of her own. Or a duke, a marquis…a viscount would also do nicely.

But in the pursuit of a fairy tale ending, Ellie learns that the sweetest crushes can be the hardest to let go. *** Logan St. James grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, in a family on the wrong side of the law. But these days, he covers his tattoos and scars with a respectable suit. He’s handsome, loyal, brave, skilled with his hands and…other body parts.

Any woman would be proud to bring him home to her family.

But there’s only one woman he wants.

For years he’s watched over her, protected her, held her hair back when she was sick, taught her how to throw a punch, and spot a liar.

He dreams of her. Would lay down his life for her.

But beautiful Ellie Hammond’s off-limits.

Everybody knows the bodyguard rules: Never lose focus, never let them out of your sight, and never, ever fall in love.

Ellie But then the mood shifts, as if the air becomes thicker, weighted, more . . . sultry. Because slowly, Logan sinks down to one knee in front of me—looking in my eyes the whole time. In this position, I could touch his shoulders, comb my fingers through his thick, dark hair. He’s the perfect height for me to bend down and kiss his mouth—the perfect height for him to kiss me back . . . in a lot of places. My breath hitches. And I wonder he feels it too. There’s a sound of tearing Velcro, and Logan takes something off his ankle—a holster, with a small silver knife, about three inches long. “Keep this on you all the time,” he says seriously. “Just in case. If you wear a skirt, the strap will fit around your thigh.” And I almost laugh. Most girls get a ring from a guy on his knees. I get a murder weapon. But still, it makes me feel safe . . . watched over. Like I’m something precious that deserves to be protected. I take the knife from him, testing the surprisingly solid, heavy weight of it in my hand. I press my index finger to the tip. Logan grabs my wrist tightly. “Careful. It’s sharp.” There’s a small, painless nick, a tiny bead of blood, so I put my finger in my mouth, sucking. And Logan’s watching me again. Watching my mouth. His chest seems to rise just a little faster, and his throat ripples when he swallows. He bends his head, curves his strong back, and then I feel his hands on my ankle, securing the strap. His touch is warm and self-assured. It’s the way he always moves—confident and experienced. Logan knows his body and he knows how to use it, in every way possible. I almost moan. The sound is in the back of my throat, but I keep it trapped. I never knew the ankle was an erogenous zone, but it sure as hell is now. A hot pulse of pleasure streaks from Logan’s fingers on my bare skin, up my thigh, between my legs. And I throb there, growing swollen and heavy as he keeps his hands on me. Can he tell? Does he know? He’s so aware of everything, always so attuned, I wonder if he can sense my arousal . . . feel it in the air that clings between us.       Emma Chase is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the hot and hilarious Tangled series and The Legal Briefs series. Blog Tour: A DESOLATE HOUR by Mae Clair!

A DESOLATE HOUR
by Mae Clair

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Pub Date: 7/18/2017

Sins of the past could destroy all of their futures . . .
For generations, Quentin Marsh’s family has seen its share of tragedy, though he remains skeptical that their misfortunes are tied to a centuries-old curse. But to placate his pregnant sister, Quentin makes the pilgrimage to Point Pleasant, West Virginia, hoping to learn more about the brutal murder of a Shawnee chief in the 1700s. Did one of the Marsh ancestors have a hand in killing the chief —the man who cursed the town with his dying breath?
While historian Sarah Sherman doesn’t believe in curses either, she’s compelled to use her knowledge of Point Pleasant to uncover the long-buried truth. The river town has had its own share of catastrophes, many tied to the legendary Mothman, the winged creature said to haunt the woods. But Quentin’s arrival soon reveals that she may have more of a stake than she realized. It seems that she and Quentin possess eerily similar family heirlooms. And the deeper the two of them dig into the past, the more their search enrages the ancient mystical forces surrounding Point Pleasant. As chaos and destruction start to befall residents, can they beat the clock to break the curse before the Mothman takes his ultimate revenge? . . .
