Type: Brother's Best Friend, Contemporary, Romance, Military hero, Damaged, "For your own good," Just Kiss Already!
About the Book: Former Army Captain and venture capitalist Preston Guthrie has always had a thing for Cat Kingston, but he never felt like he could date his best friend’s sister. Plus, he’s a wrong-side-of-the-tracks guy and she’s a white-picket-fence kind of woman. Yet when they met again just before he was deployed, sparks flew. A fire ignited. And the heat was hot. For the first time, he thought a relationship with her might be possible…until an injury in the war changed everything…
Journalist Cat Kingston had a rough couple of years, surviving a broken engagement and the loss of her job. But connecting with Preston last fall seemed right. They shared steamy Skype sessions while he was overseas—until he was wounded, and cut her off without explanation. Now he’s back in town to be the Best Man for her sister’s wedding…and she wants answers.
Preston’s struggling with a leg wound, but the war scarred him on the inside, too. When Cat pays him a surprise visit and her brother catches them in a compromising position, Preston tells him they’re dating. He’s not sure how he can spend the entire wedding week fake-dating her when the chemistry between them feels anything but… [Description from Goodreads.com]
My Review: You guys know I'm a sucker for the brother's best friend trope. I can't resist. I assume because I don't really have older siblings, and therefore never had them, or their friends, teasing me when I was younger - so, you know, I can romanticize it a bit. So of course, I jumped at the chance to read and review this book. And add to that the fact that our dreamy hero Preston is a military man? Well, I was amazed I was able to keep myself from melting right then and there.
Guys, this book was great. Seriously. I loved seeing Preston fight his feelings, and watching Cat fight right back. Sure, there was some cheese - pretending to be in a relationship to save face? C'mon, there had to be better ways to handle that. But as cheesetastic as it might have been, it still added an interesting dynamic to the story, and their relationship.
But the best part about this book was watching the slow burn between them. Sometimes there were flash-bang moments, when they would collide and kiss (or more!), until sanity brought Preston and Cat back to earth. But it was that simmering connection, pressing them together more and more, that made them realize they had to be together, because they couldn't be apart. That, right there, is what made this book a great read. I didn't want to put it down. Don't miss out on this one. And you better believe I will be checking out more by this author in the future!
Cover Lovin': Nice! And I appreciate the inclusion of Preston's tattoo. Also, I've read several of Entangled Publishing's Indulgence line, and this fits right along with those.
Recommendation: No prior knowledge necessary. But while this isn't technically a series, this author has written a book featuring Cat's sister prior to this.
Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)! An awesome, un-put-downable read!
